Surely TomTom's policy of NOT selling the constituent parts separately encourages pirating.
There must be many people who already posess a good BT GPS receiver so don't want to buy the one bundled with TTM5.
Similarly, there are many people who DON'T want to have to buy maps of the entire European continent because they only ever drive in the UK.
Pirating should not be condoned, but it would be much reduced if TT revised their marketing policy. _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

I agree with you there, It might help TomTom if they sell a software only package,
I've got TomTom on my 9500 and I'm looking to switch it to my N70,
The only way I can think of doing it without buying a whole new package is to buy the map CD and get a copy of the S60 software,
The only bit that requires activating is the maps?

Yes, the maps are generic across all TomTom platforms - a point admitted by the TomTom representative at the recent meeting in Basingstoke.
So, if you have a fully working version of TTNav on your PDA , your maps and all POIs, voices, menus, map colours will work equally well on TT mobile on your SmartPhone - all you need is a copy of the TTM software which, as far as I can see, would only be available as a pirated version on eBay.
Why don't TomTom realise that their customers who have multiple platforms may want to mix and match the various components and not be forced to buy full versions (ie. new software, new maps, new BT GPS) ? _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

There is a simpler way of doing this - just download mobile "upgrade" from TT website - it's a full version and works with no problems at all. I have three customers who bought Nav 5 and simply copied the maps and everything else to a mini-SD or MMC card and added the s/w from TT website. |

jim67: I would refrain from advocating software piracy if I were you, but it is your choice. There are legitimate ways of putting Nav 5 on a mobile device without having to buy the whole package. |

Hey Eldar, you're a star - it works! And as you're a moderator here I assume your advice is legitimate and that I shan't be accused of any naughtiness.
I did have to re-authenticate the map for TTMobile (which worked fine), but now I don't know how I stand with TomTom regarding any further authentication - for example if I ever have to reload the PDA or phone from scratch. When I first bought TTNav5 (£152) in August I registered on the TomTom site as having a PDA. Not sure what I do now that I've got both a PDA and a SmartPhone. Keep quiet I suspect!
Anyway, thanks so much once again. _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

Even moderators can and do make mistakes, but as far as I can see as long as you have the maps you paid for and you are not using them on more than one device it shouldn't be a problem. If TT chose to give away their software, then so be it. |

The Voices are not compatable as TTN5 and TTM5 use different Bit/Sample rates, (22k and 16k from memory),

By the upgrade, do you mean 5.20 Update?

Carl,
Yes, the Joanna Lumley voice tends to stutter on TTM so I've reverted to Jane. _________________ Nokia E65 & TT Nav6 |

Just wanna get this straight.
If I install the 5.2 update straight onto a blank MiniSD card and then purchase a GB Map for £60 I can use my 32 channel GPS (versus the TomTom's 12) and I'll have a supery dupery fast version of TomTom Mobile for less than £100?
Oh and so far as am aware won't have done anything illegal either as the update is freely available?
