Rather late reply from Norton, short and to the point:
"I understand from your message that you want to backup your memory card.
Peter, Kindly note that Norton Ghost 2003 does not support Memory Cards." |

Did someone say they have deleted the maps off thier I3 then copied them back and everything was OK?
Does this mean I could load some custom (NON GARMIN, HOMEMADE) maps into my I3 then if I had backed up my Garmin British maps I could then put them back.
Anyone done this?
Regarding this I had some POIs of a Wildlife reserve in Kenya with all the places worth checking out, no roads, there are no propper roads anyway.
I tried loading these POIs into the I3 and it was having non of any POI that wasnt in Northern Europe? If I had some very basic map data for some other obsure part of the world and could use it in my I3 then I would imagine with the background mapping being for that part of the world I could store POIs for there too?
Ditto, someone asking similar questions with respect to Iceland. |

How do I find out what version of the maps I have? Also it doesn't have to be a ghost image - ghost doesn't do anything a straight file copy doesn't. |

I dont want to insult Garmin. Im not interested in creating ilegal software and not interested in telling anyone else how to create it either.
So having got most of the way through understanding what they have done with these SDCards Id better stop.
If I get a fault with my SDCard I will just have to have faith that Garmin will cover that under the 12 month warantee |
I think the clue as to what is happening is in the name, it's a microSD card, with SD meaning Secure Digital. These cards have a serial number embedded in them at manufacture, and circuitry in there to allow various crytographic functions to be performed using that serial number, a hidden crypto key and some other data (Garmin's .unl file for instance).
The GPS will be able to use these functions to check that for that card the unlock code, serial number and internal key produce the correct hash output according to an algorithm it can predict the result from.
Hence, copy the data to a new card and the unlock code file no longer matches the other data and the check fails.
Don't forget that such precautions are a requirement of Garmin's licence to use the Navteq software, Garmin don't own this information and they have to protect Navteq's intellectual property. _________________ --

I don't like DRM either, but then I'm also sanguine about the cost and difficulty of collecting all the data that Navteq have and then processing it into a usable form for GPS navigation.
Perhaps one day there will be a publicly accessible map database for Europe in the same way that the public American data was used for their Tiger maps, it is, however, very out of date in comparison with commercial map data. _________________ --

THis ghost image thing.
What the guy is saying -
Has anyone with V8 maps, put thier SD card in a reader and coppied the gmapsupp files, all 150Mb of them onto their hard drive.
He wants to remove his v7 gmapsupp files and put the v8 gmapsupps on his SD card. As long as he takes a propper backup of the gmapsupp's he originally had he will be unlikely to damage anything.
That said, whether the v8 files will work on his I3 from a straight copy is anybodies guess. Might confuse everyone by working between some units and not others , Dont know, but as Garmin seem to intend to give out V8 maps to those with V7 I dont think there will be any harm in trying. |

Problem all sorted - good old understanding Argos (unit replaced)...
I'm intrigued by Garmin updating (for free?) i3's from v7 to v8. When I spoke to tech support, they told me that v8 didn't exist and was only a rumour put out on forums... |

Where do I find the version of my map? The only version I've seen is 2.something - the firmware I think. |

Well I find it rather hard to believe that all those claiming to have bought i3s with v8 maps already on, are either lying, or confused.
Sounds like either incompetence or misinformation if you ask me. |

Go to 'Settings' > '+Map' > '-MapSource' > display screen 'City Select Europe NT v7 or 8' |

Version 7, i3 purcahsed about a month ago.
P2P contains version 7, and not 8, so I assume there is no v8 CD.
So who's gonna volunteer the 8 files? |
