Hi all,
I'm totally new to GPS. I do quite a bit of trail riding on a motorcycle, sometimes alone, so I'd like to find a GPS locator that I can take with me. I would like my wife to be able to locate me via the internet in the event of an accident. Are there any GPS units that support this feature? I've seen the children's watches, but no normal GPS units that support it.
Thanks!

Hmm, there's two options available. Providing you have a Bluetooth connected mobile using GPRS, you could have CoPilot Live sending information back to the CoPilot server and your wife could track where you are this way and see if you're in one location for a long time.
The other option really would be a GPS tracker which again has GSM mobile phone technology built into it and you put a sim card into the unit, and it will send information back. The problem with most trackers is they only work when you press say a panic button.
You are correct though, no usual GPS units usually support tracking. A lot will do data logging, but not tracking. |

The problem with this technology is the availability of GSM in the remote parts of back country where you are trail riding. Unless I am mistaken (not unusual) then the digital cellphone coverage offering GSM and GPRS is still quite limited unless you are near a major highway, or in a large metropolitan area.
Analogue cellphones have a much better coverage, but I dont know if these are supported within the software packages Dave mentioned. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Great information, thanks!
I looks like I'll be waiting a little while longer for the technology to catch up...
Cheers!

This subject was on Southern BBC Tv 2 days ago. A Company from Winchester ( tel trec technologies) demonstrated it. Uses GPS chip and mobile phone all together ans sends it back to a map...Ask them for more info. |
