|

Hi,
As a local news photographer. I'm often required to go to many of the smaller villages around my area, often calling at either the local church, or the pub, or the post office for example, but I often don't have either the street or the postcode to work from.
Can I simply input the name of the village that I'm hoping to get to from home and not need a postcode or street name?
For example, I might need to get from Telford in Shropshire to Beckbury, near Shifnal, Shropshire.
Can I just enter the destination as 'Beckbury'...
The map viewer at Cartography at http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ clearly shows the village, so presuambly the i3 will direct me to the centre of the village - correct?

Will probably buy one tomorrow - can you talk me through setting the route?
Anyone have screenshots of a route being planned?

But then you have to put in a house number (which can be 0) and a street name. You do have to select a street name, though. I guess that is good enough to get you to the genreal area. |

So, to answer my original query - you DO HAVE TO HAVE a street name.
Many of the villages I go to are simply down lanes - whilst the Mapviewer at www.garmin.com/cartography shows the villages I go to, it won't help me plot the route using an i3 if I don't know what the lane is called then...? |

Yes you do but the i3 will display a list of valid (to it) street names and you can just select any one of those. It might not get you to the church but it would get you to the village.
I don't know what would happen if there were no street names but then I assume that will never arise because you wouldn't then be able to get to it (unless you had a helicopter, of course but then you'd need a different sat nav system maybe?) |

Cheers Doug.
So, in layman's terms, can you run through the procedure for plotting a route from A to B, when B would be the destination where I do no know the street name.
Do you firstly find the town/village and then the i3 present you with a list of streets?

ok here is how you look for a village
turn on the i3
pick where to
pick address
pick england
enter name of village
pick the village from the list
put in 0 when it asks for post code
then press done
them pick a street from the list
that will get you to the village you want
hope this helps |

Heres how you navigate to anywhere without having to enter any street or house number:
Where to > Cities > Enter the name of the City, town, Village you want to go to and then simply click start navigating, no messing about with entering postcodes or house numbers needed, hope that helps? _________________ Garmin Streetpilot i3,

How do you get to the 'Start Navigating' option after entering the city/town/village name? On my i3 (v2.7) I HAVE to put in a house number and street. If I select 'DONE' or press the back arrow button I just iterate between a blank screen and the select options. |

No you don't, like others have said here. You are clicking on Address instead of Cities (Americans don't have towns or villages ). If you say you want to enter an address, then obviously it's going to ask you for it 8O |

Just to add, it would appear that if you put a town or city in, it will take you to the centre of that place. That used to be where the town hall was but seems to be the commercial centre now, although Lancaster and Manchester appear to go to the town hall.
Also, not all roads have street names, so if you were doing it by address you can put the village name, then number 0 then the road classification may come up. For example if you put in Carnforth (Lancashire) there are some rural A roads up there, which you can choose, such as A65 or A683 etc. There's also B roads such as the B6254, although I'm not sure about C classification roads. |
