I went for a tour of france spain & italy using map source and the i3.
Worked ok in most cases but need an external arial.
When I returned I reloaded uk maps and found a lot of the original detail missing. Is the i3 supplyed with a higher level of detail and is it possible to replace it. |

Semaj. Try going into Settings, Map, Map Detail and then select "Most". This should display full detail. |

Iloaded the euro maps on the card .
I assumed the mapsource GB maps would be the same as the original maps installed on the card but there is a lack of detail .
The detail level is setto most.
Is there any where I can get the original maps .
I have seen ads for the i3 with a software cd included ,mine came with no cd. |

The Maps pre-loaded into the i3 are City Select Europe "NT" - these are optimised for the newer 3D Garmins.
Ordinary City Select won't have the same details as "NT", though the next update (version 8, due out soon) might.
Just out of interest, did 3D view work with the 2D maps? |

The 3d worked ok.
The bigest prob was the constant freezing on the map screen.
The only way I could run it for any length of time was to keep it on the review turns screen.
when it was frozen the only way to reboot it was to switch it off.
This could only be done by removing the battries.
I think it was freezing every time it changed from one map to another.
I did run it for a time hooked up to the lap top and muy wife doing the turn left and right bit |

I've just come back from Italy - before I went I loaded the Italy maps from City Select v7 onto a new card, and didn't have any problems at all. My i3 worked perfectly and didn't freeze up or anything.
The 2D maps worked fine, and didn't look that much different to the 3D UK & Ireland maps that came preloaded.
Which map software & version were you using Semaj? |

My understanding is that you wouldn't be able to use CitySelect at all without having the unlock code which you need to purchase from Garmin and that the CD itself (which Garmin sends for free) is totally useless without the unlock code. I assume that you haven't spent $75 for the code just to try and see whether it would work on the i3. How did you overcome this? |

Almahadeus..when you buy the city select software you get two unlock codes, therefore in theory you can use one on a garmin 60c and another on an i3 .... |

Thanks zogman but there is only a single unlock code that came with each of my Garmin V and c320. I am not aware that Garmin would give you two codes. |

If you login to the Garmin site with your registration code you'll see an option to unlock maps for a second unit. This will generate a new unlock code for you to use.
Anymore than two, and you have to pay. |

Hi Zogman - lovely break thanks. The maps only showed as 2D, as CitySelect is only 2D, but to be honest they didn't seem that different to the normal UK maps, and the navigation screens looked exactly the same to me (except with Italian road names ) |

Almahadeus - just to clarify - I purchased the CD complete with full unlock code as part of a car kit for another Garmin unit - this was the cheapest way to get the software. I think the CD that Garmin send out is the upgrade from v6 to v7 - but I could be wrong - and that only works with a valid unlock code anyway.
I think the others have covered the way of getting 2 separate unlock codes - I posted about it on one of the other threads in this forum too
http://pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=27248&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=240 [5th post down] which quotes from Garmin's website which you might find useful if you haven't already seen it. |

To clarify
I got the i3 from maplin on the net.
It was loaded with uk maps sreet level and European city select.
As I was going to europe a friend told me it would be better to use his lap top which had mapsource loaded on it .
This would provide me with better detail of europe.
Every time I uploaded a selection of maps to the i3 it deleted the maps previously installed on it.
No problem I thought just reload the UK when I got home only to discover the maps were different.
I can see all the roads on the i3 but it wont navigate on them..
Maps are metro guide Europe v7 |
