This guy is not actually doing anything wrong. He clearly states he is selling a link. If people are prepared to pay for that rather then googling for it then that is their choice.
A search for "speed camera database" will put us at the top of the results. |
So now you are saying that people can sell a link to your site & you don't mind.
Umm bit of inconsistency here.
Earlier posts in this thread condemned this, now it appears to be ok.
This may sound crazy but have you thought about placing an add on ebay's home page for your FREE database. That would stop people, would it not ?.
You could use the money from the doinations to fund it. |

No inconsistency here. I am not saying it is right or ethical. It is just not illegal.
Are you prepared to donate sufficient funds for us to place an advert on eBay? I doubt it, and why should you?
Indeed why should we have to waste any of our valuable timechasing these guys? We could spend it much nore profitably writing reviews and developing this FREE site more. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Just came across this under Bid 58079246
Is this right?
Quote: | This listing is done with the full knowledge and consent of PocketGPSWorld, proof of this can be provided upon request) |
and this?....
Quote: | You can of course try this for yourself but for simplicity I am offering the following option to you:
A ready compiled version of the database containing all of the cameras that can be copied directly across to your Navman unit via ActiveSync or a seperate SD card reader in a few easy steps.
For the BIN amount specified I will send the file to you at the start of every month, with full easy to follow instructions, for the next 6 months starting with this months release.
That works out to be only £1.60 a month and a lot less hassle for you besides
PLUS
I will also include my exclusive 33 page guide that contains topics on: |

As far as I am aware this has not been given our consent.
The advert is somewhat confusing. It does explicitly say he will emal the database which we do not agree to at all.
Obviously he is quite at liberty to write and sell a guide to installing POIs as long as he doesn not use any of our copyrighted text, or our database.
I have given him the benefit of the doubt and requested he prove that consent was given. He will then be reported to VeRO if he cannot provide satisfactory proof. Just saying it is our free database he is selling is not legal or proper. _________________ Mike Barrett |

We're still monitoring and reporting offenders on a daily basis so please keep them coming.
It's a little like sieving sand but it is having an effect and the number of sellers has reduced markedly. Two strikes and a seller loses his/her account so they will learn eventually!
Thanks to all who have reported and also to those who have donated. We won't be retiring on the proceeds but every pound helps pay for 30Gb of bandwidth each month. _________________ Darren Griffin

Not quite, they're licenced although they should be making the source clear, I'll investigate that transgression. _________________ Darren Griffin |
