Hi
I am new to all this - I received my new Toshiba E330 pda and TomTom2 this weekend. I am currently using the version 2.2 upgrade.
Unfortunately, once i get it plugged in and start driving, the pocket PC switches off while running TomTom. If I am able to turn it on again quickly, it doesn't lose my position - but will then turn itself off again 2 minutes later. And so on. More often than not, it does lose my position, and then says that the GPS is unreliable.
Would this be a problem with my PDA or with TomTom? The PDA only turns off when running TomTom, and I have checked the battery / power / lights settings to stop it going into power-save mode.
To make things worse it has completely crashed my PDA 3 times now [in 4 days], (even reset didn't work) so I have had to completely wipe my PDA.
When I am lucky, it stops turning itself off after half an hour or so, and then works like a dream...
I've had a quick look through this forum but couldn't find any other references to this problem. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This sounds more like to me that you have a Toshiba issue. If you've got power to the Pocket PC it shouldn't turn itself off. There is an option in TomTom GPS Driver to say keep the Pocket PC from falling asleep but this is only for when you're on battery or you have your power profiles configured incorrectly.
If you've had to also do a complete hard reset (not soft reset) and reinstall everything from scratch, this would suggest to me an issue with the Toshiba.
There were issues with 2.05 but these apparently are fixed in 2.20/2.22. |

I have had this problem with my FujSei Loox. Most of the time it is OK, but sometimes it will keep turning off. Resetting usually fixes it. Good job there is no law about resetting PDAs while driving. |

I have an e330 with TomTom2 and have not had it switch off unexpectedly in this way.
jedstagg, perhaps the connection between the TomTom lead and your vehicle's cigarette ligher socket is not as good as it could be, and the plug is not always making contact? If so, that may cause communication errors and would switch the e330 off after 2 mins on battery power assuming that is how you have the power saving features configured. Although you do say in your message that you have the e330 configured not to go into power save mode.
As Dave says, you could try changing the option in the GPS Driver so that TomTom doesn't go to sleep (that's how I have mine set).
Having said all that, it certainly doesn't seem right that a soft reset (stylus prod through a little hole in the back of the e330) will not clear a crash. I agree with Dave that there may well be something wrong with the PDA hardware. _________________ Jules

Thanks for your responses.
On Friday I had to go and visit a company up in Peterborough. I got hopelessly lost because my pocket PC kept turning itself off, and while eventually it did stay on, it then couldn't get a GPS fix.
It took a great measure of restraint to avoid throwing the damn thing out of the window on the way home. I have to say it caused a great many problems and left me very annoyed with the product.
As a last-ditch attempt to fix the problem I reinstalled everything one last time, including the maps and the upgrade, and set the option in the GPS driver to stop it falling alseep.
And, today I tested it. The good news is that it didn't fall asleep once - which is unheard of. Unfortunately it had major problems getting a GPS fix, but that is possibly due to the connection to the cigarette lighter being a bit dodgy.
So it seems I may have got around the problem of it turning off (possibly by changing the GPS driver settings) - now I just need to get a GPS fix! And they say these things are supposed to make life easier.... |
