Strangely that thought did cross my mind. I suspect that I am an average user and will probably not report most errors I find, particularly if they are minor ones.
If we all started reoporting errors though it would probably have a knock-on effect and prevent some of the really important things getting fixed. _________________ Mike Barrett |

If TeleAtlas release new map data 4 times a year, why doesn't TomTom ?
Surely more frequent updates would mean a low price to update..... |

This is a very good idea - not only would it allow efforts to be co-ordinated it would encourage more people to report errors. _________________ Thanks,

It costs the same for TomTom to buy each update which is in essence a whole new map. So the costs would not come down, indeed the could well prove more expensive to the end user e.g.
Yearly Map Update - 80% user take up
Qtly Map Update - 30% user take up
So TomTom would need to increase the end user costs to recoup their outlay if they moved to a Qtly update. _________________ Darren Griffin |

If you are travelling from Royston towards Stevenage on the A505 you will have to travel through Baldock; that is if you ignore the map on TTG 500.
The bypass is, probably 75% finished, but TomTom have all the junctions, roundabouts there and ready for routing. It really is unbelievable; especailly as the new A120 Stansted to Braintree bypass (opened 9th July 2004) and the A10 bypass from Puckeridge to Ware (opened 8th October 2004) bypass are missing, nothing!
The sooner, especially following the M6 fiasco, things like this - major roads are sorted once and for good, the better.
TomTom should have a link to TT5 maps to browse and make sure the roads
you use are included.

Nice report
I can't understand how the process can take so long and not be accurate by now. There can't be that many new roads or alterations per year, and if the existing database is there and is reused, then it should not take too much time to alter and any discrepencies ironed out for the subsequent map data.
If I can buy an accurate A-Z street atlas every year, then why can't I get accurate gps maps? |

Great great article, thanks for allowing us the opportunity, through you, to ask questions to TA.
My question was answered, even though i didn't think they'd want to let us know how much of their business TT represents. I think as the years go by the accuracy of the maps will increase but i hope that they try to maintain a good standard instead of finding new territories to pioneer.
Once again, you gotta love this website for the news, reviews and forum. great great work and thanks.

Good questions but no real answers, no updates direct, only errors reported by the masses get actioned and if your a TT user tuff that's what get, and you've got to lump it. Teleatlas should forget the enhancements and concentrate on getting the mapping correct!

Mike, what can I say ? Suberb article and well reported. You asked the questions that 'we' asked and got answers.
Thanks for your time and effort.
I now know more about satnav mapping but we all know that it could be improved.
LOCAL REPORTING like speedcams.
Thanks again Mike, great read - very informative.

Thanks for a very in-depth article.
On the subject of reporting errors, I tried but failed to understand how to convert lon/lat to} WGS84 X/Y Co-ordinates,ormore to the point why I would want to?
I note the USA teleatlas website reporting page is more user friendly.

Where does TeleAtlas ask you to convert to WGS84? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Gawd! Talk about making it complicated.
We'll raise this with the UK Office whom we're meeting soon. _________________ Darren Griffin |

great report by the way
just one query, as and when updates are done by TA are they free? if not why not? because i live in wales (no jokes please) and hundereds of the street name are spelt wrong, now i bought my ttg300 in good faith that i would be able to get from A to B with no hassle, why should we have to pay for a correction in spelling of a street name, when it should have been spelt correctly in the first place?
Many Thanks

If the AA misspelt a road name in a paper Atlas, do you think they'd go to the bother of re-printing it and if they did do you think it would be free? No and No.
It's no different for digital maps. _________________ Darren Griffin |
