Pairing BT-338 with Windows XP

Hi All,

I can't imagine that this topic was never addressed in this forum, however a simple search did not yield any results. With that sais, sorry in advance for an reiteration...

Now, here's the issue: (I bet you guessed it by the subject line :S)

My BT-338 works fine with my PocketPC. I simply enable the bluetooth rasio on both devices, fire up Destinator and scan for a device. Bingo! All is well.

When I try doing the same thing from my laptop (for MS Streets & Trips 2005) I have no such success. My Windows XP "Bluetooth Manager" software detects the device, but does not offer me any "service" (e.g. OBEX, etc..) to pair it with. When I try a similar method as the PocketPC (just scan the COM ports for a device) I get nothing.

Has anyone succeeded to get the BT-338 to work with a laptop? If so, I would love to hear from you.

The receiver works fine with XP, it offers the SPP service. Yours is probably set to SiRF mode - you may need to change that to NMEA mode. If all else fails, remove the battery for a while to force a factory reset.

Can you elaborate on how to switch between the 2 modes, or is that only done via factory reset?

In the mean time, I have removed the battery... I'll leave it out for say 15 minutes?

tools like SiRFDemo can do that, or SPViewer on the Pocket PC. The old TomTom GPS drivers (up to 3.x) may also be able to do that.

you should rather assume 15 hours until the capacitor is empty

OK. "SPViewer download" in Google only turns up some freeware image viewer for PPC. SiRFDemo will not do it for me (yet) because I can not connect to the BT-338 via my laptop - that's what I'm trying to solve...

I have noticed something else.

My WinXP 'Bluetooth Manager' detects the BT-338 as "BT-GPS-30E075" & the type (e.g. PDA, Smartphone, etc..) is "Unknown: Major(31), Minor(0)"

Is this right? Do I need some sort of driver?

T -12:30hrs and counting on factory-reset Smile

Are you using a bluetooth dongle on the laptop?..if so then there should be installation software to load first - certainly my Belkin dongle came with an installation cd.

WinXP sees my BT338 as BT-GPS-30947C BT-GPS

OK, sorry for wasting nayones time, and I hope someone somewhere will get some useful knowlege from this thread. I did.

In any cased, my problem was solved by using the native Windows XP "Bluetooth Manager" instead of the one that came with my Dell Latitude D610 (i.e. Intel PRO, aka BTtray.exe).

For some reason, the Intel BT Manager does not like the device....
