Hi

I realise that this idea would affect the guarantee on the unit and would need to be carried out by a suitably skilled person, but has anybody had an earpiece jack fitted to the Tom Tom Go. I'm interested, and would like to know more, because I'd like to carry it in a "bumbag" and use it while riding a motorcycle.

PS I couldn't find any reference via Search

Saw a mention on the TomTom site, that the forthcoming TomTomRider for bikers will ship with a Bluetooth earpiece.
Don't know if the 500 and 700 can be used like that too....

If you don't need the car mount you could dismantle that and add an earpiece socket to it. The Opentom site shows you which connectors you'll need to attach the socket to:

TomRob,

Have a look at this thread http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=19740&highlight=

There are pictures there showing how I wired the cradle following the guidance from the Opentom site and got a sound output to use on the motorbike. It works very well indeed.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to explore the use of wiring via the base connector.

Perhaps I shouldn't have to ask this but I don't want to risk doing any damage. Embarassed Can you please tell me how to get the base unit to come apart?

For this you'll need Torx drivers in sizes 6 and 8. Plus a decent fingernail.

Firstly, use your decent fingernail to prise up the thin end of the the rubber covering on the underside of the cradle and remove the two T6 screws. The bottom cover should now unclip.

Then use the T8 to take out the two larger screws on the underside of the rotation unit. Twist the unit so that the bayonet slots align and the centre part will drop out.

To finally access the contact board remove the two remaining T6 screws.

The contacts board can now be lifted out. Using some very thin wire (stripped from a 4 core telephone cable) I soldered a length onto the two pins (see the OpenTom wiki for connections), bending the other pins out of the way first. These give the left and right hand channel signals. The return ground for the sound signal was connected to the black (earth) wire.

In my case I used a chassis-mounted stereo jack socket, but it was a bit of a squeeze to get in in place involving grinding down some edges. In retrospect an inline connector might have been better, put onto a short flying lead that could come out of the spare hole in the bottom cover. Both types of socket are available from Maplins at around 49p each.

As they say in Haynes workshop manuals - reassembly is the reverse of dis-assembly. Rolling Eyes

Hope that helps.

Tom,

Hope it goes well. By all means drop me a PM if you run into problems. Having now had the TTG on the motorbike for a while I really wonder how I ever managed without it.
