Hi all. After a weekend carting my London A to Z book around in my pocket I'm trying to get hold of something similar in digital form which I can download to my Pocket PC. I've found that the A to Z mapping company produce digitial maps (in partnership with memory map I think) but I can't find a review of it or any user feedback anywhere.

My main 'nice to have' would be the ability to add points of interest to an overlay on the map. I'm not so bothered about the software actually being able to navigate me from place to place (I can use TomTom for this if really stuck), although it would be nice if the software would work with my GPS to give a live position update on the map.

So has anyone reading this got any experience of the A to Z software? Can it do what I want it to? Alternatively is there any better software out there I've missed? Thanks for any pointers....

what was again the reason for not using TomTom? V5 even has the pedestrian mode back in.

I'm using my hx4700 + BC-307 GPS with memory-map and the 1:50000 landranger series maps very successfully.. Great for geocaching..

You can download a 30day trial version of memory-map from their website http://www.memory-map.co.uk/downloads.htm, also from that page you can download sample maps including A-Z (Manchester I believe). This gives you full functionality including PDA downloads for the 30 days

Memory Map does have A-Z's. But why spend money on this when TomTom will do the job?

Sorry, I don't actually have the A-Z maps, or Tom Tom to compare, but here are a few comments on Memory Map:

The basic MM functionality will be the same as with any other of their map scales. You can download a "Route Finding" map of the whole of the UK (I posted the URL elsewhere on this forum) to check out that the basic real-time positioning from the GPS works.

The POIs would be normal "waypoints" and I don't think that MM is particularly good at organising these.

A thing you may not be able to check is how good is the Gazetteer (I presume there is one) and how well the search works. The "whole of UK" OS gazetteer was too slow to be useful on my Acer (because MM seems to do a kind of wildcard search), but then it does contain around 250,000 entries! Also, I think the gazetteer is stored in the PPC RAM, so you can't swap it around with different memory cards.

Thanks for the pointers everyone - I'll give the A-Z demo a try.

The reason for wanting the A-Z software is for clarity really. I like wandering around and exploring bits of London. While TomTom is ok for the roads, it doesn't really go into enough detail for walking around the city - it won't tell you the name of the park or building you're passing, or let you sit down with a pint and work out what place looks worth a visit next for example. The normal A-Z street atlases are good for this, but I get fed up of carting them around with me. I want digital mapping on my pocket pc to save space, but also to let me add my own POIs to the map when I pass something I want to come back to another day, or if I hear of something worth a look next time I'm nearby for example. I'd be using the software more for reference than navigating really.

Anyway, I'm off to download the memory map demo now.....

Memory Map is good for that then, as you can use detailed A to Z mapping but also have an OS landranger map which is great for an overview of the local area.
