Bluetooth GPS Receiver problem

Hi

Just bought a Fuzion GPS X50 receiver off nex_gen sales on ebay. Charged it up etc but it does nothing but sit there (outside) with a solid red light and does'nt seem to lock on to anything. Questions am i doin something wrong, does it have to learn where they are, can the unit perform without any pc/pda tomtom software running. My spvc500/tomtom3 software finds the gps receiver and shows maybe 1 or 2 bars on a sat but thats it they just go up and down on strength and say not a valid gps signal. Faulty unit ? what does anybody think.
