Mapopolis keeps Favorites in the main menu, so you can''t have more than 9 or 10. However, you can use the POI (landmark) feature to store your favourites - this is also much safer in case the config gets lost and you have to start over. _________________ Lutz

Thanks. I knew that I could use the contact book (most pkg do), but some of these locations I don’t have complete name/address for and sometimes I don’t have a name just a partial address for. It is going to be used in the courier business and I then can just IM say 123 main St, 21061. Sounds funny, but a driver could go there 20 times with 20 different names!
BTW, Delorme has a good deal there BT with PPC/Smarphone software for $150.00 and was wondering how it stacked up to Mapopolis with say a Holux BT?
Thanks |

The DeLorme BlueLogger receiver is quite good - I have reviewed it a while back. The software however is substandard for street routing (it's ok fot topo)
Mapopolis ist the most robust one when it comes to find funny street names, and it also offers some form of route optimization. _________________ Lutz

OK then Mapopolis is is. I just use MS MapPoint(Navteq) to find addresses and it is lacking. I am just looking at the price for the BT. After all I need 20 or so of them. You see Couriers waste a lot of time on that last mile. I’m looking for that ROI!
Thanks again! |

With the BlueLogger you can track where they have been... 8)
One word of caution - as much as I like Mapopolis I do admit that its user interface is not the best. It depends how you expect your couriers to do data entry/address search - with a stylus or with their gloves on? Mapopolis doesn't have a finger friendly UI and requires you to use a stylus.
Best would be if you try it out - the demo maps are good for nine days. _________________ Lutz

Thanks once again. Mapopolis emailed me and said they could extend the tryout times because of the amount of copies I’m after.
It is looking like I will try the BlueLogger GPS for the price and take the software for a test drive. And also trying Mapopolis.
I am still wondering if a Smarphone display is big enough. I am used to an Axim. That entering text thing may be an issue that’s why I was after a list.
BTW I liked that “track where they have been...” comment. |

Sorry for the confusion.
I found out that both companies have Smart phone versions. DeLorme calls them HH, but it says that it can be used on a smart phone.
I am going to try it on both! I like the Smart phone because there is only one device to lose or run over. I’m worried about the display though, can’t be any bigger than a postage stamp. If that doesn’t work then its Pocket PC’s. |

yep, that's a smartphone
Navigation is about rerouting and voice commands. The screen size is not that important. Keep your eyes on the street. _________________ Lutz

I wasn't referring to driving. The screen size and resolution make it difficult to decide your path. Around the Baltimore, DC area Copilot rarely takes you the best way because of the traffic patterns. So for me Navigation is about planning, similar to opening a map, finding an address and deciding witch way to go.
Safety is always 1st. It’s also the law! |

I see what you mean. Neither Mapopolis nor CoPilot have permanent avoids (only the old TomTom has that) but the routes that Mapopolis comes up with do mostly make sense to me - in my area. You'll have to test it for your area. _________________ Lutz

Now you’re feeling my pain, but its worse, the patterns change with the time of day, so even adding permanent voids won’t work.
I think the key is using the device to get the basic path then drive letting it re-route until that last part. When I drove I would start with it on then when I got to a certain point, turned it off till I needed it again. The problem is that when it going from one stop to another it would go crazy then run out of memory then crash and even lose my address! That’s why couriers hate them, but if it was written better I think it would be a great tool!
I even have a friend with an $80.00 BMW with nav that he doesn’t use because adding the address is such a pain. Too bad you can’t IM the address into the software somehow. It reels my mind why some company doesn’t do it. I have to tell you there are 10’s of thousands of users out there just waiting. Technology actually helping people that don’t even care about email, BLOGs, Online shopping etc.! |
