Hi,
Yes, you can prepare the maps as below and then copy each file across from the PC folder: "c:\Program Files\Common files\Fugawi\PocketPC Export" to the SD card folder "FugawiLib\Maps" using either a USB card reader (which will take a few seconds) or windows explorer to the PPC (which may take a few minutes).
The OS Fugawi license only permits files containing less than 1600 square km (the same as a Landranger map) to be exported, so you have to prepare about 50 files for one Fugawi region or 200 for the whole of the UK!
When zoomed out far enough to display a 1600 sq.km region, it's difficult to see much detail, so I use the following method:
In FugawiUK, select: Forms:Selection and Forms:Waypoints to open two windows.
Create a new folder (right-click) in Waypoints called, e.g., "Map Corners" (so you can hide them later).
Create two waypoints corresponding to the SW and NE corners of the map that you want to transfer (you can edit the waypoints to a suitable name (e.g. location+sw/ne) and adjust the GRs to convenient numbers).
Select each waypoint in turn (in the Waypoints window) and drag it to the Selection window (this does a copy not a move).
After both waypoints are copied, a rectangle should appear around them on the map.
On the pull-down menu select: Edit:Export_selection_to_PDA, and enter a suitable name for the map.
Click OK and Fugawi will take a minute or more to create the file in the "...Export" folder (as above).
Delete the waypoints in the Selection window, repeat for as many maps as required and finally transfer all to the SD card(s).
Personally, I think Memory Map has better (more) functionality on the PPC, and their map transfer has some differences. It seems to be possible to transfer a whole MM region to the PPC/SD card as a single file, but each file is about 350 Mbytes, so the whole of the UK (12 regions) is likely to need 4 Gig! (Fugawi data seems to take only about 60% of the space of a similar region in MM, so 2 Gig may be sufficient for the UK). Alternatively, MM can create a file of the "visible map portion", which can be a rectangle as small as desired, but is limited by the maximum outwards zoom, to about 7000 sq.km. on a 1280x1024 screen. The file can be sent to "storage card on PC", which in practice is any path on the PC. But, on the PPC, ALL the maps in the menu box appear as, e.g. "From OS 1:50k South East England - Region 2 (xx.xM)" even if you've given them a useful filename. However, if you can remember what filename you used, you can enter it in the search box. Or does anybody know a better method? (You can use "Find Place", but searching the gazetteer of the whole UK seems painfully slow on the PPC ).
Cheers,
Alan. |
