After a bit more researching I think I'm going to go for a classic.

The reason being I need European main road maps for my holiday on the 31st May. If I buy a 300 I can't get the european maps as they are not out yet. I can't buy the Go 500 as it isn't released until the 2nd June Sad

So I plan to buy the Classic and use it on holiday 8)
Then when I return update to V5 upgrade the maps for £50 approx and I will be able to use the post code function.

The only downside is that I won't have bluetooth functions but I don't plan on having a bluetooth phone.

Only trouble is trying to locate somewhere with Classic Go's in stock and a good price ie under £420 Confused

Once the 300 is widely available the price of any Classic should tumble.

You can update to V5 now from the TomTom website. No need to wait till you come back from your hols.

Not sure why you think price of classic GO will tumble - since it is now proving difficult to get a GO classic from the usual suspects (amazon, dabs only have GO 300 on their sites) then increasing rarity value will keep the price up. It might shade downwards a bit - but tumble!! I doubt it. I assume Tomtom have switched production to the new range which means new stocks of classics will run out.

The classic is a great device. Someone I know asked me to help get his new palm running with Michelin navigation - what a performance and when I finally sorted it out the result was very poor in comparison to my GO. I didn't have the heart to tell him he'd wasted his money. Just shows how good the tomtom GO platform is, even in classic format.

Well after thinking it through I wanted a Classic, but trying to get hold of one is nearly impossible Sad no one has them in stock and I need one soon. Where as 300 are in stock at my local comet. Smile

So going back to the drawing board, I've been thinking of buy a GO 300. But I need the "Main Roads of Europe" maps. My friend has a Classic with these maps on CD could I transfer them to a GO 300. Or are they locked under a authorisation codes.

If european main roads are all you want (not street level map) then GO 300 should come with V5 maps which I think have european main roads intergrated with local street level map.

I'm not sure about that. My understanding is that with the 300 you get the UK maps on the SD card. If you get the 500 you get the UK + European maps already on the SD card, and not on the CD as with the Go Classic.

I would buy a GO 500 buts its not available yet and I will need it before its released Sad

oh rite my understanding was that all V5 regonal maps had major roads of europe intergeated to the same map. ie allready on the card. Same as what us clasic go users would get if we updated to v5 maps. Could be wrong tho certainley wouldnt be the first time

There are two types of maps: country and country Plus; country is a street level map of a country and Plus is a country plus Smile the major roads of Europe integrated in one map

You should already have got the V5 software from the download site.

The map upgrade is coincidental and is a set of upgraded maps. If you upgrade from Classic you get the TomTom 500 map which is your country plus the integrated maps of Major roads of Europe, because that was what you already had. You also get postcodes in GB.

If you just want to buy different maps you will have to wait as only upgrades are available at the moment.

Just seen the information on the 300 by Darren Griffin and he says ...

"I ought to mention that the package we received and which is the final shipping version comes with both 12v and 240v chargers contrary to what has been posted on some other web sites."

I brought a Go 300 from a major retailler in the UK, with no 240V power supply, its listed as an option in the manual.......

Have I been had, or is it normal for 300s not to come with a mains adaptor?

The comparison chart on the TomTom website very clearly states that the GO 300 comes with in-car charger but NOT a mains charger.

So, you have not been had. If you want a mains charger then you can buy one as an optional extra. Frankly, I never use mine so If I had a GO 300 instead of a GO (classic) it would make little difference.
