route are save in the route.dat file
you could save the file route.dat and reuse later ..
you could find it, i think, in \My Documents\MioMap or something like this

Do you try a hard-reset ? i don't think it's possible to loose operating system because it is in ROM.

your PNA is a Windows CE 4.2 platform, you could use HPC software for Arm processor or PocketPC software with a few dll.

i think you have to copy from navigon 5 cd-rom (PNA version i hope for you) to sd-card :
autorunce.exe
mnavdce.cab
and the map file
and make a hard-reset on your PNA
