For cross state trips you use the "Major Roads of America" or "cities of the USA" maps - those contain the highway grid.

I called the helpline with a similar query having seen one on ebay with a damaged screen

they wanted 50 quid to look at it, and a further 70 quid to replace screen - basically not worth it!
