However there is no indication that CameraAlert is working/ getting a signal. The red icon, when I go to map view, is always red not blue.

No? Our CamerAlert App is a dedicated iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch SpeedCamera Alert. It downloads the data in the app and requires no fiddling other than setting your preferences.
