I've read install instructions for some of the add-ons, and they refer to copying files into directorys in HOME and then installing.

Yup, as the man says. ciggy lighter PSUs/ chargers are great things, but leave 'em on unattended and you're asking for a flat battery. Do it a couple of times and you'll have a dead battery...
