The Garmin 18 uses NVRAM. It doesnt seem to be available in Europe, but only costs $80 in the US. I am tempted to get one, but I am not sure how it behaves in town.

If I knew that the backup on a new unit lasted say 2 weeks then I would buy that rather than ... |

OK, I've got it!
The Benelux maps are on 2 Cds, CD1 is the dutch names and CD2 is the French names. There is nothing that indicates this, so everyone installs CD1 and gets the Dutch names. |

It is very simple but you need to know. If you choose French names then it will use French names in Bruxelles. If you choose Dutch names then it will use Dutch names in Brussel.

Even if you have all the maps on one card, you will still have to switch between Belgium and Germany, so you still cant plan the whole trip in one go.

RS232 works fine over 5 metres, only the data goes over the cable, not the GPS signal, so it doesnt affect the sensitivity. Might improve it if you find a better position for the GPS.
