Hi, all, hopefully someone might be able to assist. My brother in law has bought one of these units, as he's not got a laptop I offered to do the update for him but gave up after around 5 hours when it seemed to hang, no increase in % complete. He's been back to Halfords and swapped it for another one, brought it straight round, set up Garmin Express and started the updates off. Its now stuck on 16.8% complete (step 2 of 3) and has been for the last hour and a half, laptop is still connected to my router via cable, decided not to trust wifi. Its clearly downloading data as the broadband for the rest of us is useless and the yellow light on the router is blinking furiously. Has anyone had the same experience, will it suddenly "catch up" or is it possibly another duff unit? I'm a TomTom man, never had problems like these before.
Cheers,
Mick |

The Garmin download can take a few hours depending on broadband speed.
One thing to check is that your USB ports are not set to allow the PC to put them into sleep mode. I think by default they are so change them. Bottom set in device manager.
The other thing is that the download consists of lots of small file segments that are stitched together once the download is complete. Because of this it's perfectly OK to shut down Garmin Express and start again. It will recognise what's already downloaded rather than start again.
Another fly in the ointment could be your ISP throttling you because of a multi Gb download. _________________ DashCam:

Agree with Kremmen.
Check USB ports aren't going to sleep. If there really has been no movement for over an hour something is stuck somewhere. Disconnect then start again.
But really I'm not sure why you're in such a rush to update. Get it working first. Then do a full back up.
Once you're happy its been working for a while do the update. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Hi, Kremmen and sussamb, after a flurry of activity it now says it's updated! Just starting the device up and it says it's installing updates so all seems well. We were just following the advice from the Halfords assistant re updates, brother in law has just started a new job so he needs a unit he can rely on.
Thanks for your suggestions, hopefully I won't see it again!

I've just realised the mistake. .... following Halfords advice.
I'll bet they've never done an update in anger and it can be awkward.
I've had the same as you recently where it appeared to hang but when I powered the unit it told me it was complete.
Garmin Express needs a rework. My 2597 usually updates without issue but my 2599 always needs some form of intervention, usually a disconnect and restart like you've done. _________________ DashCam:
