|
|
I still have my ol' ONE XL, but as it only supports SD memory cards, which limits the memory to 2 GB, I can't tinker it to have one single map for the whole of Europe. So I'm still stuck with the Iron Curtain, whenever I head East from Germany or cross the Gulf of Finland to the South...
This means I can't setup itienaries for my whole trip, because the Eastern European map is on the memory card. Thus I'm now looking to buy a cheap second hand NAV2 unit with support for larger SDHC cards or sufficient internal memory, so that I can still have my itienaries, PLUS get rid of that Iron Curtain.
I have since last year had a Garmin nuLink! 2390 for live traffic and a single European map, but it's tedious in terms of POIs (can't select what's shown on the map and POI searching is worthless) and there's lots of other minor things I can't stand as a seasoned TomTom user.
So please suggest me a model that I can find as second hand and allows these things:
- NAV2 (TomTom HOME and itienaries)
- internal memory or SDHC memory card support that allows a 2227.6 MB large map (Europe 45 with IQ Routes stats)
Any other alternatives than Go 910 and its internal HDD? |

Are you sure you are asking the right question? A second hand device is unlikely to come with fresh maps and may not even come with maps of the exact area that you need, and buying maps is expensive. Consider the full cost of ownership and you may decide that something like the 825 from Halfords for £179.00 with maps of Full Europe and with Lifetime updates may be more economical over the long term. |

How about a TomTom refurbished GO 750 LIVE?
£139 on the TomTom website, but apparently £111.20 using the code shown here.
You would have pay to get the latest maps though. _________________ Anita

Most certainly I am. A 2nd hand NAV2 device costs 10-80£/5-80€ on eBay, adding to that map updates, safety cameras and possibly a new map, it's still cheaper than buying a NAV3 with all the useful features missing.
I have no use for a Go 825.
The Go 750 might work, but then again I'm not sure if it has something missing compared to older NAV2 devices? |

The advent of Lifetime maps - not available for Nav2 devices - has changed the whole calculus. Yes, there are some features missing such as itineraries and the ability to make a full backup, but certainly not all the usefull ones, and over the life of the device you would be paying through the nose for those. I have both a XXL540 (Nav2) and a Start 25 (Nav3) with current European maps and find the Start to be very useable and as it often gives better navigation algorithms and route recommendations I use that one in preference. |

The Go940 was reputedly the best of the Nav2 bunch. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

You still have the annual option, which I've been happy with in the past.

I did pretty clearly state what I need and why. Should I reiterate it? Itienaries.
It doesn't cost more than a new device with annual renewals. And since there's no GLONASS support or anything actually useful new stuff in the current product line, there's no point in buying something with less features than before.
Also I did mention that I do have a Garmin as my main satnav now, but I still need some of the things that I miss from TomTom's NAV2 devices. We're talking about serious car travel here, not just doing the groceries at Tesco. Seriously, I can't mark up a 2000-3000 km trip with a few meager waypoints. Now don't pester me more with the obvious imcompatibility of new devices for my case. |

NOT TRUE!! !
They can be hard to find, but 4GB ordinary SD cards are available. I have been using one in a GO720 for several years now. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Even the SD Association denies they exist: https://www.sdcard.org/consumers/cards . Stories about the mythical 4GB SD card appear from time to time but when pushed no-one can ever point to a source for them. Care to try? |

Rubbish.
I have posted links to them several times in the past from Amazon, eBay and other webshops. The SD association might not mention them, but that is because they don't neccessarily fully conform to their standards. However they do exist and they do work in TomToms. I have several, and the last time I bought one was for a friend, about six months ago. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Thanks cjay... that looks exactly like one of mine.
In case anyone is wondering if it's really vanilla-SD or is actually SDHC after all, here are the first two reviews of it:
Quote: | Works with TomTom's!
If like me you have an older TomTom sat nav that only reads SD cards up to 2gb and not the newer SDHC, this is the card for you.... |
Quote: | I needed a couple of 4GB SD (NOT SDHC) cards for the Audi RNS-E stereo in my car. It was difficult to find pure SD Cards as nearly all are SDHC, even at 4GB size. These work perfectly in my car as required. |

I believe the One XL is limited to a maximum of a 2Gb SD card. Mind you I've always stuck to that without experimenting with a larger card.
Ideally you are looking for a second hand x30 device which can handle up to 32GB on an SDHC card. A card is pretty vital as x30s have a reputation for problems with the internal memory, but mine runs happily off an sd card. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Okay, looks like I have something to follow up on now. I'll see what I can find in terms of those devices as second hand.
Thanks!
Oh, and I did order one 4 GB SD card from eBay to see how it works with a ONE XL. |
