NUVI 3490 - How to Back-up

Just bought a Nuvi 3490 - very impressed so far (replaced my 3790) - a couple of new British voices as well (James and Kate which Garmin calls VCT files but no Daniel installed - although available via webupdater)

When you back-up the Nuvi (as you should with a new machine) there are no hidden files displayed so thought this info may help others who have taken the plunge.

Make NUVI DIR & Files visible for Backup
1. To make all of Nuvi files visible you must unhide protected files via Win7 like any other HD.
2. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
3. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
4. The Developers Screen will pop up
5. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
6. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
7. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable
8. Start NUVI and it should recognize it is hooked up to the computer.
9. Explorer will now see all files in ROOT directory and the .System directories.

When I backed up mine I used Windows to show all 'system' and 'hidden' files and then just did a straightforward drive copy (as in the "F" drive for example).

Hopefully that did the whole shooting match.

That is how you used to back up the previous generation of Nuvis (3790 etc..). The latest generation have made it more complicated - when you first look in the Internal Storage directory the System files are not displayed (even though Hidden Files option is enabled). Hence you have to follow the procedure I provided to access these files.

I'm sure my 2200 had a .system folder and that backed up OK AFAIK
