I just bought a new TomTom XXL 540 yesterday. I would lke to be able to load it with all the favourites currently stored on my old device.
can anyone advise me of a quick and painless way of doing this?
are the two systems compatible as the old device runs TT navigator 5?
or does it have to be done the long way by adding them manually? |

Easy way is to locate the MapSettings.cfg file in the map folder on the old TTN5 set up, copy this file to your computer.
Open the MapSettings.cfg using POIEdit which is free to download from Here you can edit the contents as it will contain your favourites as well as recent destinations.
Once happy with the contents of the file choose File/ Save As name the file "_Favourites" (Without the "" but the underscore at the start of the file name is important) make sure you select the file type to ov2
Copy the "_Favourites.ov2" file to the map folder on your new toy, the old favourites can now be accessed by selecting Navigate To/ POI and select _Favourites from the list, by putting the underscore at the start of the file name ensures it will allways be at the top of the list making it easy to find - Mike |

I have been using my Garmin 3790T for over 12 months now, cracking product but their PC interface software is about as good as that offered by TomTom i.e. not very good - Mike |

Not sure what 'software' you're referring to, you can easily manipulate files etc via your PC without any software. You might be referring to Basecamp, which I agree takes some getting used to
It replaced Mapsource, which IMO was a far more intuitive program |

Huh?
From the Garmin website:
Quote: | To backup the Favorites from the Garmin device:
Instructions for a PC:
1. Connect the Garmin device to a computer using a data transfer USB cable.
2. Double-click on My Computer or Computer.
3. Right-click on the Garmin device drive and select Open.
4. Locate and double-click the GPX Folder.
* Some devices require you to open the folder named "Garmin" or "Internal Storage" first, then the GPX Folder
5. Right-click and copy the Current.gpx file.
6. Locate your computer's Desktop.
7. Right-click and select Paste to save the Current.gpx file onto your Desktop.
To send the file back to the GPS, please follow the steps below:
1. Right-click on the Current.gpx file on your Desktop and select Rename.
2. Name the file Current1.gpx and then press Enter.
3. Right-click on the Current1.gpx file and select Copy.
4. Connect your device to your computer.
5. Double-click on My Computer or Computer.
6. Right-click on the Garmin device drive and select Open.
7. Locate and double-click the GPX Folder. (On some devices you may need to open the Garmin Folder first then open the GPX Folder)
8. Right-click and select Paste.
9. Disconnect your device from your computer and allow it to boot up. Some devices do not automatically boot up. If your device does not automatically boot up, turn the device on as normal.
Your favorites will now be restored on your device. |
That doesn't sound a great deal easier to me, and that doesn't even explain how to modify the list.
And are adding POIs easier, when you have to upload all your POI files in one go and start renaming files if you want some warnings in mph and others in km/h? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
