|
|
I am considering replacing my faithful TT One Second Edition from 2008, for which the maps are now quite outdated.
One feature which I have used frequently on the TT is itinerary planning, and I understand that not all Garmin models have the equivalent Trip Planner feature.
In my local Auchan here in Luxembourg I can buy the 1390T with a lifetime map guarantee for 149 euros, but it seems from the downloadable manual on the Garmin website that this model does not have the Trip Planner.
The 2340 lmt for 189 euros does, I think, have the Trip Planner, but I would like to know whether there are any lower-end Nuvis which have this feature? |

Are you sure you want trip planner? Many users have complained that Garmin's 'Trip Planner' is not as good as their previous models that did routes, which used what they described as a 'route planner'.
I have a 1490 (all of the 14xx series have it too) which has the last incarnation of Garmin's route planner. That and the latest firmware (which is very stable) make it, in my view, the best satnav they do at the moment.
Take a look at it, you should find it at a good price too. |

@sussamb, thanks.
Could you (or anyone) explain briefly how Garmin "Routes" works, or give me a link to an online manual including this feature?
In the TT One, the "itinerary" as used by me means that I enter a starting point and a finishing point, and the TT does the routing and lets me step through it. I'm not looking for anything more than this. But I had always understood that older Garmins simply didn't offer this facility, maybe I was wrong. |

Unfortunately Garmin manuals don't really explain routes at all, but they're pretty simple. You simply tap Where to, Routes, insert a start and finish point, and any intermediate points you want, then the nuvi will calculate the route and show it to you on the map, you then tap Go and that's it!
You can also edit the route, which allows you to delete or add further points, change the order or simply let the nuvi optimise the route for you. You can also import routes from various on line route planners.
Hope that helps |

Sorry, I have to ask again on this. I looked at a 1390T in a shop here, and in the "Where to" screens there doesn't seem to be a "Routes" option visible. It's clearly mentioned in the manual, so why isn't it there? |

You have to use the scroll Arrow bottom right hand corner of the Where to screen, to see Routes
Take Care

I used the scroll arrow and looked at all the options on the 2 screens, definitely no "Routes". |

That's because the manual is for the 13xx AND 14xx series, and the 13xx series doesn't have the routing capability of the 14xx series
I was talking about the 14xx series in my reply to you |

Yes, I had become confused. And the Garmin manual covers lots of models without indicating which feature is present in which model.
The local Auchan has a 1490TV in stock but it's more expensive than I want to pay - 255 euros if I recall right. |

The 1490TV is a specialist model, you should be looking more at a 14xx with a combination of LM (Lifetime map updates) and T (Traffic) depending on what you want. |
