I started with a TomTom One version one and I could enter a 6 digit postcode and arrive at my destination fairly easily. After some years, that device would not switch on so I got a secondhand TomTom One version three. This would only allow the first 3 digits of a postcode and then wanted street names and house numbers - which sometimes I did not know. Satellite drop-out proved the device unreliable so I recently bought a Garmin Nuvi that does most things, including showing terrain and allowing you to speak to it!
However, despite being able to enter 6-digit postcodes, it then asks for about 4 or 5 other things like house number and street, etc., sometimes when there isn't that information available or I simply do not have it. It eventually insists that I have to choose a road and/or street name before it will allow me to proceed. I find this maddening!!!
Furthermore, I get more navigation errors these days with devices not keeping up with changes of direction - has something happened to the GPS in the world over the last 18 months? |

Which nuvi do you have?
Both mine allow for a postcode entry only, plus number if you want. The problems you're having aren't normal. |

I have a nuvi 3790. I was going to do the following, followed by what sometimes haappens:
Click on "where to?"
click on "Address".
spell postcode (It then validates the postcode and I have to click on it).
It then asks for house number but I can ignore that and press "Done".
However, doing what I described above is now working okay! Although it's possible it has remembered the locations I used before. I have just tried a postcodeI haven't used on the nuvi before and this time, after I validated the postcode, and then clicked 'done' because it's a farm with no house number, it then asked me which road and I had a list to choose from.
Oddly, because I am trying to do this in reply to your question, I went back to the postcode, validated it again and suddenly it showed the location without asking for a road choice.
It looks like I need to do that if I enter a new postcode and it will give me the desired location second go! |

If postcodes cover more than one street you will be given a choice of streets, but you always have the option of clicking done, and it'll work out the address based on its best guess.
Indeed if you tap Search All you can enter whatever you want, eg part of a street name, hit done and it will then give you a list of streets that include that part.
I actually find the nuvi search capability extremely good.
Just remember that at any time you're asked for more detail you can hit Done if you so wish. |

Thanks for the feedback. I'll see how it goes. I probably need to use it on a few more routes to become more familiar with the way it works compared to my previous TomTom satnavs. |

A postcode in a rural area will often cover considerably more distance on a road often covering multiple roads unlike you find in a town/ city, I find postcodes out in the country can often be misleading due to this which affects all Nav devices that support postcode search - Mike |
