TT3 Stability in Map mode

I've been running wired TT3 (3.01) on an Ipaq (3950) for some weeks now but only really got a chance to try it in unfamiliar territory this week.

Everything worked fine but I did get stability problems when running in map mode. The following scenario seems to cause TT3 problems...

At the end of a navigation, unplugging the hardware, looking at the map (especially scrolling whilst zoomed out) and then entering a new destination. When I plug the PPC back in, the software often hangs in Navigation mode. I can usually effect a cure by quitting the application (in severe cases, only a soft reset will do) and running it again.

The Map view does seem prone to cause display problems and drag the PPC to a crawl which causes problems later. I appear to have plenty of memory left and my SD card hasn't caused problems before when I used to use it to play MP3s.

Any kown problem or any fixes?

I have to ask what SD card you have. Almost all these issues can be traced back to problem SD cards.

If you can tell me the make and any markings on the card we can identify if this is one of the cards that are known to have problems.

I have been using TTN2 with a 128MB MAXELL SD Card with great success since Christmas. I haven't installed my TTN3 yet because I need to buy a larger SD Card(s) for the France / Spain maps as well as my GB map. Is there a list somewhere of brands to avoid Question

I know when I bought my first SD Card it caused problems & I had to exchange it for a different make but I can't remember what make the first one was Embarassed

Do you know if the so called high speed cards are necessary or can I use any card Question

I have been shopping around and there seems to be a great deal of price variation and I wonder if this is one of those things where you get what you pay for Question

Any help would be much appreciated especially advice about cards bought over the net because the cost of a 512MB SD Card is bad enough without the added frustration of buying duff cards and thinking I have installed the new TTN3 incorrectly

There is a list of troublesome cards but DavidW is best placed to answer on this subject as he's fast becoming an expert on SD card issues, I'll ask him to respond to your query.

If you post the markings from the back of your current SD card, I may well be able to identify the manufacturer.

With SD cards you definitely get what you pay for. You may land up buying a replacement if you buy a cheap card to start with.

For a new 512MB SD card, email sales@valueflash.co.uk and ask them if the 512MB Integral SD cards they have in stock are still the batch that are made by Panasonic (an alternative is to place the order and put "Must be Panasonic" in the intended usage field - though I'd email them first).

If they say the card will be Panasonic, order one of those - that's what I did a few weeks ago. They're a little more expensive than some SD cards, but Panasonic made cards are arguably the best cards out there, and ValueFlash's price is pretty good (just under 100 pounds including VAT and shipping).

Be aware that Integral cards can come from several manufacturers including the bad Sandisk made cards, so if you just buy Integral, you could get anything. I think 512MB is the only size of Integral SD card that ValueFlash carry that's made by Panasonic. I'm pretty sure they sold out of the 256MB Integral SD cards they had that were made by Panasonic. I believe if you want a Panasonic 256MB SD card, the Dane-Elec XS (not the standard Dane-Elec) is Panasonic - again, email them to check.

It seems that the 'high speed' cards tend to be either Toshiba or Panasonic, both of which are good. Panasonic have a slight performance edge on read, and are significantly faster on write according to my benchmarks and benchmark figures I've seen from others - but for most navigation applications they'll perform similarly.

Well as I said, I've been using the card in the past to play MP3s without a stutter but for the record....

Got a Pansonic 128Mb SD from Argos (I know I could of got it much cheaper elsewhere Embarassed

- but I had a voucher to get rid off Wink

)

No probs here, so far in fact I've been very pleased with it compared to my 256Mb UltraII CF Card.

Yo tenía el mismo problema, despues de horas de probar cosas la solución definitiva ha sido cambiar el gps driver a la versión 2.06 y todo perfecto, pruebalo.

That's install gps driver 2.06 on the one you have now, bye bye map freeze.....
