Anyone know if it is possible to clone/copy the SD card from the Renault TomTom Carminat satnav. I have tried to copy my card to a Transcend 4Gb card from the Tom Tom Home backup file so that I have a spare card in case of failure or in case any updates corrupt the original. The restore process from the backup files completes perfectly but when I install the new card into the Satnav, I get the message that "this map cannot be used on this device". I am assuming that the activation code on the original card is not being copied over or is being corrupted in the restore process.
Anyone know if this is possible or of any software to do it. I have asked TomTom but not surprisingly - no reply.

This is part of their copyright protection system. You can't simply copy the card.
But you can achieve it by first copying the card, then using the new card in your PC buy and download a new map, then it'll work.
In my case, I bought the map update service soon after my Latest Map Guarantee was used. I have been downloading the new maps ever since. This morning, just to test for you, I have used my old copy of the Carminat card which I took on a 4GB card (to allow space for Europe map if I ever go abroad with the vehicle). On inserting it into my computer, Home offered me the latest map (v870, which I downloaded onto the smaller original SD card last week), I accepted, it downloaded and installed and I've just put it into the Carminat slot and it worked fine. It will NOT work in any other device, of course. _________________ Dennis

Many thanks for that Dennis. That confirms my suspicions. I am actually ready for a map update so I may try that. At least that way I will have a working copy if the original goes belly up.

Put your new blank card in the Carminat first with it switched off. Switch on and let it detect the card and say you have no maps present. Use the menu option to remove the card. Then copy the original card on to your new one and it will work. Putting it in the Carminat Unit first 'authorises' the card and codes it to the unit. |

Hi Datostar
Yes, I did actually suss that out just after I posted the original request. I now have a reliable working copy. In hindsight I should have added that info to my post so as not to waste other people's time and to help others also. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to respond. |
