Anyone know of a way of making a screen print from a TomTom. I used to be able to do it with my Navman after installing a clever bit of coding but that's long since lost _________________ Gee-Pee

Yep......
Using Explorer, make a folder in your unit called screen (lower case).
Within the folder create a text file (use Notepad) called capture (no extension, all lower case, NOTHING in the file).
Now then, when there is something on the unit you want to capture, press the top left corner of the screen. You'll hear the sound of a shutter click. Then use Explorer and view the contents of the screen folder. You'll now see a .jpg file with a weird name (that you can change, of course).
Copy the file to your image program or whatever you want to do with it.
Also, you can have more than 1 image captures at a time. _________________ David |

Connect the device to the PC and use Windows Explorer to create a folder named "screen" (without the "")
Start Note pad on the PC and simply do "File Save As" name the file "capture" (without the "") save the file to your PC desktop, you don't have any actual text in the file - it is empty) - shutdown notepad.
Right click the file "capture.txt" and select re-name, get rid of the .txt part leaving the file named "capture" - ignore the warnings Windows offers and just continue.
Put the "capture" file in the "screen" folder on the device.
To use simply press the top left corner of the screen and a screen grab will be made, the resultant bmp files will be saved straight in to the "screen"folder.
Same method as Dave, although I get bmp files and have to convert them to jpg in order to put the image on the forum, and don't forget we have limits for screen grabs of 400 pixel width, so you will need to reduce the image pixel size slightly - Mike |

Thank you both. That was quick !!!!
I wasn't actually thinking of this Forum but it will be useful if needed. It's for another (closed) Forum...I expect their pixel/image size will be similar to PGPSW. _________________ Gee-Pee

Thanks, Mike. I think indeed the file is saved as a .bmp rather than a .jpg. Thanks for the clarification. _________________ David |

If you want to do this at home, then just connect your TT to TT HOME.
Click the Operate my device. Once connected then just hit the Print Screen button on your pc and then open your desired paint/image program and then paste as new image, done. |

Just be aware that this facility disables the + button at the top left of your screen, so you won't be able to magnify your driving view of the map. Also, I often hit the screen dump area of the screen instead of the End Phonecall button. Not a problem, but it does capture a lotta rubbish screen dumps which I have to go in and delete from time to time! _________________ Dennis

It doesn't disable the "zoom in" function but does alter how you use it, try putting your finger below or to the right of the + sign (where the altitude displays if you have put that option on) and slide your finger over to the + sign, the map will now zoom without taking a screen capture - Mike |

One of these days, You're gonna write a manual and TomTom will pay You a large amount of money for it. I hope. (Let's face it, they don't have much idea how their devices work, do they?). _________________ Dennis

It's doubly annoying if you have the screen set up left handed.
On the Browse map page, the "centre the map on me" button at the top of the zoom bar is in the same place.
I wish TT would put it in a menu like Garmin do. |

I have my three (TomTom) devices set up for right handed, but I work two of them with my left hand. _________________ Dennis

Hello guys, I've just tried the method of obtaining a screen capture by making a folder named screen and having a notepad file (without .txt) in it and I can't seem to get it work. Any clues what i could be doing wrong?
I have a tomtom one XL WE and I am using windows XP.
I reported some new camera locations recently then realised I had got them wrong. I thought this would be a sure fire way of getting the location correct.
Thanks in advance
