|
|
Since the last update of the firmware on my 1690 I've noticed that quite a lot of the time (but not always) I don't have a distance to next turn display in the top left corner like I did before.
This is with firmware 4.10 which has fixed the problem of the device sometimes starting up very slowly but has introduced this missing distance to turn display.
Has anyone else noticed this? |

The latest version of firmware for the 1690 is 3.40 (previously 3.00). I have no such problems with my 1690, indeed the latest firmware seems to have solved man of the 1690's many bugs.
Is 4.10 not for a different model? _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.70

I stand corrected, I was looking at the GPS version which is 4.10, the main device software is 3.40
I agree that 3.40 fixed a lot of bugs but this missing distance to turn is pretty major, have you seen that at all?
Set up a route from anywhere in Colchester to anywhere in Brentwood and simulate it, once you get on the A12 there are a couple of "keep right on A12" announcements and then the final one to the pull off has no distance on mine. The same is reciprocated coming back up the A12 to turn to Colchester or Clacton. |

I can't replicate this issue as I get the lane assist arrows showing the countdown to next turn. I have 2011.10 maps.
Version 3.50 is now out which may be worth a try
Changes from version 3.40 to version 3.50:
Fixed issue where occasionally Ciao position was not updating automatically if the user did not go into the Ciao application.
Added a one-time retry for sending transactions that fail due to poor network signal quality.
Reduce the max size of some of the uploads.
Fixed issue where 'Charging Complete' was not showing properly in all languages.
Fixed error on the weather page with displaying invalid chance of precipitation.
Improved performance of ecoRoute HD. _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.70

Today I bought the latest maps and did the upgrade to 3.50 but I'm still getting this.
You can clearly see the next turn with no distance showing in the top left corner. There's no lane assist on this junction. |

Looking at the manual is there anything under
Tools, Settings, Map
that could explain the problem.
Specifically "Map Data Layout". I haven't got a 1690 here so i have no idea if this is any use but it could be this affects what you see on screen?? Maybe the "Restore" function would help? |

I checked those settings, Paul - They were all at default anyway but I hit reset and it made no difference.
This happened after the update to 3.40. I've logged a call with Garmin but have had no reply. It's not a major issue at the moment as I've not had to go anywhere I'm unfamiliar with but I'd say that one of the most important pieces of information a GPS should display is distance to next turn. Without it, it's a waste of space. |

Is there anyway in which you can back-date your unit to 3.00. A call to Garmin support with your issue may enable them to e-mail the file to you as webupdater now only shows the latest firmware unlike the 13XX and 14XX models and 76X where there were links you could edit to download different firmware versions.
Have you noticed this anywhere else? I regularly go on the A3, M25, M40, M1, M6 and A5 and haven't experienced your issue yet but am keeping a watch out for it _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.70

After multiple emails back and forth between myself and Garmin, they're replacing it under warranty. |

A couple of weeks ago I saw your issue for the first time on the A1 on my 1690 and I have now seen it on the same place on my new 3790T. Given I hadn't seen it before I suspect there may be a coding error on the Navteq map, rather than Garmin so worth reporting it on the Navteq website.
Good customer service from Garmin and at least your "Connected" subscription will start again for your troubles _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.70

Garmin did suggest it might be a mapping error as well but I thought that unlikely seeing as it was perfectly fine on 3.0 but then I had the problem with 3.40 and 3.50.
Garmin couldn't reproduce the error and although they directed me to a firmware page, the 1690 is so new that there were no previous versions available to download (at least, that was their story) so I couldn't revert to 3.0.
Have you logged a call with Garmin/Navteq for the error you're seeing? |

The replacement arrived today and I'm going to drive to work tomorrow with nothing done to it and see how it performs - Hopefully everything will be OK.
It's been pre-registered within my account on the Garmin website and it shows a registration date of 1st July 2010 so does that mean my traffic subscription will be valid for one year from then? I also wonder if I'll get a freebie map update if the next one comes out within however many days it is that maps are supplied free after buying a unit. Hope so
/edit - I've checked and it comes with the 2010.20 maps which are outdated. I bought the next version on the old one so I guess I've got to work out if I can download them somehow. I'll still try it first tomorrow and see what happens anyway. |

For what it's worth, the replacement straight out of the box was exactly the same.
I got a refund and now I use the TomTom app on my iPhone. I still prefer Garmin to TomTom but I'm afraid the unit was useless for me. |

In my opinion it is the map that is at fault. I have up to date maps of Europe and USA. I have yet to cross the channel to try Europe but I have been to Florida and to the best of my memory all the distance to's were in place. In the UK it seems to afflict slip roads off dual carriageways especially if the map features a "Keep to the Right" announcement if your route is straight on. The A12 / A120 slip on the Southbound A12 is like this, distance shown if you are going straight, not shown if you are going up the slip to the A120. Like previous posters I have seen this in several locations that do not change hence my suspicion it's the map. It must be the map that tells the Sat Nav what to display, if the data is missing it has no chance. |
