According to the BBC, all Os maps will be free except the paper ones, to encourage thrid party take-up http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8597779.stm
How will this affect the price of Satmap's maps?
Will others be able to produce maps compatible with Satmap?
Is this why Satmap are trying to sell a load of maps at half price? |

Only specific data is being released free and this doesn't include the 25K or 50K scale OS maps in paper or difital form so non of us are going to really benefit from this grand offer - To be honest its a big song and dance with no real substance as they haven't given much away at all.
Don't you receive the newsletter by e-mail from this site as this was covered in this weeks Editorial by Darren in the first section of the letter - Mike |

I don't know about others but I found the article sadly lacking in substance - maybe its a government initiative?
So I went to the OS website and found that:
The following datasets are included in OS OpenData:
• OS Street View
• 1: 50 000 Gazetteer
• 1: 250 000 Colour Raster
• OS Locator
• Boundary-Line
• Code-Point Open
• Meridian 2
• Strategi
• MiniScale
• Land-Form PANORAMA
• OS VectorMap District (available May 2010)
No mention there of our beloved 1:25,000 mapping
The original article says
"There was concern that by giving away the 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 maps you would undermine the continued provision of a nationwide paper map series,"
Which I take to mean that this bit makes money and we aren't giving it up.
So while I remain hopeful I am not going to hold my breath or expect free 1:25,000 maps from Satmap in the foreseeable future. _________________ LostMike
