I've read enough posts about HD traffic to drive me to drink, but I think I've finally worked out what those of you with HD traffic have concluded.

It was pants, but is now sorted and works well.

Is this correct? if so, a shopping I will go.

Thanks

Its way better than the other traffic systems but there are still times when it can get it wrong, that said no traffic system will ever be 100% accurate, its about as good as you can currently get.

Don't forget to look at the motorway gantry signs though as sometimes these can have information about lane closure/ road closure that might be missing from the HD Traffic - Mike

The most charitable description of HD Traffic is that it's less rubbish than the alternatives.

To me, the system is best at reporting traffic flows and average speeds. Less accurate at reporting road closures or other incidents, particularly when compaired to the GPRS/RDS-TMC service. (Different service provider?)

Used in conjunction with Radio and online news feeds it's the best combanation availible to date that I know of.

Has vastly improved over the last few weeks.
Used side by side with a RDS-TMC system, it [Tom Tom HD system] vastly out performs anything else availible on the market currently.

Realisticly though, another manufacture has to offer a similar system to the market to compete with TomTom as currently there is nothing to really compaire the Tom Tom system to.

Once other manufactures offer similar systems, then we will see just how good the TomTom system really is.

Expect Navteq to provide that competition some time in the next 12-18 months.

I agree, HD is the best implementation yet.

Apart from the server issues a month or so ago it is very reliable and provides a lot of detail.

Having used GPRS Traffic and RDS-TMC Traffic in the past HD is far superior, but not perfect!

I used the Live services for the first time today on a trip to London and was very impressed with the traffic information. Accurate all the way even down to the delay time through Hindhead, always a pain in the posterior!!
Best information on any system I have had - and that be many!!

I used HD Live extensively over the holidays and found it to be absolutely spot on.

Shock, Horror, it even reported a road closure when the M54 was closed at J7 on 28/12 for ice and then gave me the most logical alternative route to my destination taking me down a road I never even knew existed close to my father's house.
Across the Pennines in the M62 it worked well also taking me around a 15 minute delay in about 10 minutes

I definitely believe it's getting better

GPRS traffic works perfect for me.

HD traffic is so unreliable that's why I didn't bother buying a TT Live device.

You are of course entitled to your own opinion but as somebody who has used HD Traffic since its' introduction and through the recent spell of server problems which frustrated all of us but which were subsequently fixed I can assure you that over Xmas and the New Year it worked superbly!
The accuracy has improved tenfold over the early offerings and to the extent where I have now shelved plans to replace my 540 with something else

So what experience of HD traffic is that statement based on?

That's exactly my finding too. The odd issue like the last 48 hrs, but generally a great service. Since HD 3.0 was launched, I now get traffic displays through my small town when its rush hour or school run time.

I am yet to see another provider offer a service anything like Tomtom HD Traffic in a GPS unit!

It is fair to say that TT's one-to-one customer service is, at best, disorganised and, at worst, utterly appalling. For that reason I didn't have any high hopes of the HD Traffic service being fixed when it took a nosedive during December. However since its recovery it actually seems to be better than ever...

I was coming into work this morning, having deliberately set off after 9am and sticking to minor roads to avoid traffic congestion yet, with just four miles to go, the 940 suddenly flashed up a "Slow traffic" warning for my route, advising that the incurred delay was 4 minutes. Thinking it was telling porkies I just carried on but, sure enough, within a couple of miles vehicles had started to crawl. The cause turned out to be a slow-moving tractor which had left a farm a few minutes earlier. I arrived at work about three minutes later than planned. To me that showed just how responsive and accurate the HD service can be.

OK that's just a single example but in the twelve months I've been using it, the December incident aside, the HD service has gone from being fairly good to astonishingly reliable and accurate. If (and it is a *big* "If"!!) TomTom can maintain the HD service to this degree, I think it's one of the greatest innovations since SatNav itself.

What TT need to do, however, is improve how quickly they acknowledge and address problems with the service when they occur. Back in December they took far too long (a couple of weeks, I think?) to sort out what was, in effect, a complete outage. (My suspicion is that they simply rebooted their Traffic server!)

Unless you're completely happy with your GPRS service, I'd urge you to give HD Traffic another try! Very Happy

Cheers,

Dave
