Speed Camera Free Swindon Focuses on Accident Investigation

It's now been almost four months since Swindon Council famously scrapped their fixed speed cameras. Swindon's five fixed cameras were decommissioned on July 31 due to funding issues.

The Swindon Advertiser has reported a Scrutiny Committee meeting where Swindon Council’s lead member for transport, Councillor Peter Greenhalgh, stated that on the roads where the speed cameras had been removed, "There has been no increase in accidents at those locations. Speed is an issue but there’s no evidence speeds have increased on those roads. We often get people saying speeds are too fast on a certain road then, when we do some analysis, we don’t get any evidence of that."

He also said that the withdrawal of the town's cameras meant the £320,000 road safety budget could now be spent more effectively adding, "We are now refocusing our resources on delivering elements such as proper accident investigation. We are also looking at things like signage and at road layout. We need to focus on methods that make it harder for people to speed in the first place."

Perhaps motorists are not speeding because they fear there is now a greater risk of being caught?
There was a fixed camera near me that was vandalised so many times that it finally disappeared but now there is a mobile there regularly which I reported yet again yesterday.
