I think I am right in thinking that a mobile speed camera can only be operated from a previously nominated position.
If that is the case, does that also apply to hand held speed guns operated by a policeman at the side of the road?
Also, can a speed gun work when it is pointed at a vehicle going away from it? I ask the second question as, some time ago I passed a policeman operating a speed gun on traffic in the opposite direction to me but, as I passed him, he pointed the gun at the back of my car. Fortunately I was behaving myself. On this occassion he was operating from a known mobile camera site but I have recently seen one operating from a site that is not a known mobile camera site.

No. They can operate where they like.

My understanding is that it can.

No I haven't. I wasn't aware that it was reportable.
I have now reported it as a mobile.

In Britain, is it the tendency for the traffic guys to stay in the same spot day after day with hand held radar guns?

In my neck of the woods, they tend to move around. Mind you, there do seem to be favourite "fishing holes" for them ....... Razz

Probably the same in the UK too. I certainly don't see them in the same place day after day, hence we introduced the "Seen Again" reports...

The individual traffic units can set up and move on where they like depending on traffic conditions. They don't have to stick to appointed partnership spots.
For example if there are two 30mph cameras 5 miles apart on the same road, and drivers speed up in between, then that's where you could find a traffic unit.

Traffic garages have their appointed areas to cover, and depending on the Force area, this can be a large chunk of territory.
