Garmin nuvi 660fm where to - extras query

Hi i have a Garmin nuvi 660fm and have the latest europe maps, database from pgw and all of the updates from Garmin for the unit.

My question is about the use of the custom poi's i have added (the free ones)
how do you access them?
Is it whilst driving they pop up or ?
Is it via searching for specifics like ATM's or campsites etc?
which icons in the 'where to?' menue use them is it the Extras, food, lodging?
The manual does not explain noob questions like these so any advice would be great!

The usual way is to go

Where To?, Extras, Custom POIs.

Then you'll see your categories. They won't mix with the built in POIs. I believe with the older models such as the 660FM they only appear on screen if you are navigating to them.

You can have the unit sound an alert every time you go near one but it soon gets annoying.
