the unit shuts down if the battery power falls off.
I assume that it is a 'safe' shut down in that info etc is stored up to that point. Personally not used batteries for sometime now

But it is a better option to get the rechargable power unit.

And depending on circumstances how long were you thinking of going walking for? If long day walks no problem IF one has access to a power point definitely no problem If walking and camping then yes one has a problem using the power unit instead of batteries.
On a charged unit it will last more than a day- remember to use the pwer saving facility options when you are initially setting up the unit to YOUR
wants.
speaking for myself the unit resides in my pocket while out walking and comes out for 'inspection' when route details have to be checked or i am
confirming my location. So while in my pocket the unit is 'slumbering' and the screen is off and activated by key press and will remain on for the time period that I/you enter at initialization something like 90 seconds

All data is stored in flash memory or on the SD card. Loss of power will not result in a loss of data.

With the rechargeable pack fitted you should be good for a couple of days use if used normaly, have a read through This Thread where there are some optional external battery packs pictured and discussed - great for a longer trip away from the power - Mike

the power pack comes with everything.

IF you meant is it included in with the device then the answer is NO .
But when considering the cost of replacable AA batteries one is quids in.
One could go for rechargble batteries- but its your choice

For day walks a rechargable battery topped up, power unit topped up or batteries that have not been left in the unit should be perfectly adequate for your day walks.

During a recent backpacking trip I took Energiser Ultimate Lithium batteries in place of my Li Poly rechargeable. I was very pleased to get the same lifetime out of these as the Li Poly. This was 20-22 hours using all energy saving options, screen at 40% and screen off after 15 secs. They are much lighter than normal AA alkalines too.

If you're creating a track and the batteries go, when you insert new batteries you get a straight line track between your current position and the point at which the batteries failed. You can avoid this by keeping a close eye on the unit when you expect the batteries to fail. This will come with experience. It's easier with the Li Poly rechargeable because you get more warning. With the Energiser Li's the unit would drop a level in battery charge indicator, and then fail completely in the space of 10 mins to 30 mins.

Just a point about the LiPol battery pack. I suspect there is a very large margin on this pack, and most suppliers will give you a very substantial discount on it if you buy it at the same time you buy your Satmap.
And it IS worth getting, so you might as well buy it at the same time.
