Did you have a GPS fix and did the device actually plan a route or sit there with a greyed out screen - what was the sat strength meter showing in the lower right corner - Mike

I can't see how this can have anything to do with the speed camera database?
Has restoring a backup worked?

Do you have a full back up of the device from a point prior to it going wrong? if so I would format the device and reinstall your backup, if you have no back up please make one now before we can try any other tricks with the unit. You can find out how to make a back up using Windows xplorer by reading the FAQ thread which is near the top of this forum section index in the "sticky" threads, you need to follow FAQ #1 - Mike

On the PC start Windows Explorer, plug your TomTom in to the PC and let it connect, you will see the device appear as a specific drive letter which should be called TomTom.
Right click this and select "Format" from the popup list, Windows will warn you about erasing data etc simply OK these notices - do a full format, don't use the option for "Quick Format" which is a checkbox option on the format screen.
Once the format is complete re-install your backup and start the device, then see what it does - Mike

You can use a card reader to format / re-install the software to the card it won't make any difference to the device how the card is formatted. All the software and folders the device needs to operate are on the card not the unit.
There is a small amount of flash storage on the device which can be cleared, but for now I think a basic format and reinstallation will be all thats needed, if we have to clear the device flash store then we can try that later - Mike

AM I right in thinking we could do with confirming a couple of major things before we go any further?

Some TomTom ONEs have everything stored on an SD card, some have only internal memory and no card slot at all and some have BOTH (but can only use one at a time).

It sounds like you have one of the ones with BOTH, but just to confirm, can you say what the number on the bottom is (something like "4N01.000")

A lot of what's going on could be because you have two different operating systems in different places.

As for backups, it is far better to backup and restore EVERYTHING at once, rather then messing about with individual files.

OK, so it's a TomTom One Original/First Edition. That means no internal storage, just the SD card.

Quote:

Cannot delete the files on the SD card because they are corrupt, properties shows them as 0bytes. Renamed them cline2.dat cname2.dot was then able to copy over the backup files. Too good to be true, I deleted cline2 and cname2 but they reappear

Looks like the card itself is starting to fail (it happens).
Do you have another card you could try?

You say that you have the original 256mb SD card, but the PC did not recognise it... does the ONE itself work with that card?

That's a good start...

I would invest in a new 1 or 2GB card (2GB for Europe, 1GB for UK) and transfer everything from the original card to that one.
Check it works (without the maps), then use TomTom home to update the software as far as you can (you may need to use TomTom Home v1 first, and then Home v2) we can advise on that...

Once you have got to that stage, we can see if we can recover the map from anywhere - either the original card or one of your backups.
If not, you'll have to buy another map from TomTom

When you say it won't accept the 1GB card, is that before or after you have copied to it?

What I'm expecting to do is this:
1. put one of the working cards in the TomTom and run Windows Explorer
2. copy everything from that card to the PC
3. Use "safely disconnect", put the new card in the TomTom and format it in the TomTom (again using Explorer). Fat32 should be fine.
4. copy everything you saved earlier back to that card
5. Delete the the named map's folder (Great_Britain, Western Europe or whatever)
5. Use "Safely disconnect" and unplug. Start up the TomTom and it should behave exactly the same as the old card.

Once you've got to that stage we can see what to do next, but if you can't get to that stage, there must be something wrong with the copying methods.

I would very much doubt there is anything wrong with the TomTom hardware when you get the "no maps found" message... just software issues.

Its quite probable that the device is rejecting the other cards due to their read speed which it checks as it boots up, if its too slow it will flash the red cross and refuse to start.
Get a good quality high speed card for the device, the ones that cost £2 for 1GB from e-bay are a waste of £2 as often these don't work in the device, Topram, or Transend or the Sandisk Extreme ranges are good cards that we know work - Mike
