Mobile, Wireless Upstarts & Innovators Demo New Products to Hundreds of Top Journalists at ShowStoppers Mobile World Congress

Press showcase event in Barcelona doubles in size

ShowStoppers @ Mobile World Congress 2009
BARCELONA, Spain--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hundreds of top journalists, analysts and bloggers previewed new mobile and wireless products for work, home and play introduced by 25-plus upstarts, industry leaders and innovators at ShowStoppers, the press-only showcase event Sunday evening in Barcelona, Spain.

ShowStoppers @ Mobile World Congress 2009 took place at Hotel Majestic in central Barcelona the night before the international mobile tradefair begins. The invitation-only media event gives journalists an early start on new product announcements, sneak previews, and news.

“Six TV interviews, including CNN. The Financial Times. It’s been manic,” said David Lock, director of European Operations for Vuzix, which demonstrated personal video headsets and heads-up displays that immerse users of mobile phones inside huge virtual screens. “We’ve generated intense interest. This will raise our profile and communicate out to potential customers.”

Jim Adams, vice president of sales and business development, said it was “a mob scene” as Zeemote demonstrated how to turn mobile phones into gaming consoles. “There were cameras shooting video for news broadcast, with the biggest and best reporters from Germany, Korea, United Kingdom.”

“It’s the quality of the editorial people – that’s why we keep coming back,” said Robert Elliott, chief marketing officer for Smith Micro Software, which has exhibited at several ShowStoppers events each year “for at least five years.”

As Bitstream introduced its new Bolt mobile web browser, John Sidline, managing partner of Mobility PR said, “This is our fifth ShowStoppers with multiple clients. Every single one has been a success. It’s an amazing economy of scale. The press is engaged. They come here to work. There is no better investment for a company with news.”

Novotel introduced MiFi, which runs from a SIM card and turns a smartphone into a wireless hotspot. Alcatel-Lucent demonstrated 3D-enriched content for mobile users – and launched new features for its RFID service, tikitag, while also reintroducing the venture under its new name, touchatag. Kingston Technology demonstrated advanced memory products for mobile phone users.

Other exhibitors included Cellusys, Cibenex, Dial2Do, emoze, IndiaGames (igfun), iSkin, Mobiun, Newbay, Openmind, Opera Software, Phoenix Technologies, Sentry Wireless, Tranverse and Vyro Games.

Dave Graveline’s “Into Tomorrow,” BNETtv and AVING.net broadcast, streamed, podcast and blogged live from stages inside ShowStoppers – and recorded additional coverage for later broadcast.

“This is our second event at Mobile World Congress,” said Steve Leon, partner, ShowStoppers. “And this year’s event is twice the size of last year – with more companies exhibiting and more press attending.

“This year-to-year growth in a tough economy underscores that companies see the value and benefit of meeting face-to-face with the press,” said Leon. “ShowStoppers creates an efficient way for journalists to see, touch, feel and play with new products quickly, from multiple companies, to talk with key PR and marketing personnel, to interview executives, away from the noise of the tradeshow floor,” said Leon.

“For exhibiting companies, there’s nothing more productive than conversing one-on-one with a reporter – who’s actually holding your product in her hands – to help generate product coverage and interviews. This creates a conduit into new markets, visibility, branding, business development and potential sales.”
