We have a Nuvi 200W that has worked well. Last week, though, we noticed that when we bring up a keyboard display (to enter an address, for example), many of the keys have the wrong letter on them. For example, the keys for the first half of the alphabet may be in the correct place, but the keys for the second half of the alphabet have seemingly-random characters on them. And when I press one of the random-character keys, the letter that comes up on the screen agrees with the letter on the keyboard.
As a similar problem, when we bring up the Language screen, the names of the languages are recognizable because some of the characters are correct - but about half of the characters are wrong.
It seems to be different each time I power on. For example, right now most of the keys are correct, but the J, S, X, and Y keys have been replaced by B, C, P, and H. And in the Language window, "American English" has been replaced by "AeErican English".
The Reset button has no effect. Shutting off the machine, waiting 5 minutes, and restarting has no effect, except to change which keys are messed up.
It appears that the software in the Nuvi needed an update. There is an update from Garmin, and one item in the change log describes exactly this problem. All seems well after the update.
I have no idea why a problem like this would surface only after a year of use ...
