Does this new version automatically know when it's dark and switch to night colours on its own? I've just received mine this evening and can't understand why it goes straight onto night colours as soon as I turn it on.

Change Preferences
Right Arrow 3 times
Brightness Preferences

Then you will see the box:

Switch to night view when dark

Then just keep tapping the Done button to get back to the nav screen.

Not sure when it knows what time to go to night view, but again you can quickly select night or day from:

Change Preferences
Use night colours
(when you come back to this menu it will say Use day colours)

As far as I know, none of the One models has a light sensor, so cannot do any automatic day/night switching.

I think all you've got is the "switch to day/night colours" in the preferences menu and the two sliders in "Brightness preferences"

Don't those that do switch automatically use a sensor?

Garmin use the Dusk and Dawn times to make the change. Very effective and easy to implement, means i don't have to manually change. Not sure why TT went with a sensor as it's prone to changes in light (i.e. tunnels, trees etc)

The One V4 does have a selection for auto switching as pocketgps said but it must work on dusk / dawn tables as the times change and it works indoors in a glass cabinet at the back of a shop Smile

That is a big advantage over timed changes as reduced brightness is exactly what you want in tunnels and any other times the outside brightness is reduced.

I was under the impression that whilst this is the intention, the reality was different and that the unit would change from day to night and back sporadically.

The Brightness menu is page 4 of 5 on my ONE v4

Also on that menu you can set both day-time and night-time brightness via 2 sliders as well as selecting if you want night-time brightness to work by ticking the box.

Typical... there's no mention of that tick-box in the downloadable version of the manual (HERE)

Brightness Preferences
Tap this button to set the brightness of the screen.
Move the sliders to set the brightness separately for day map colours and
for night map colours.
You can set the map colour scheme by tapping Change map colours.

Without a light sensor, where is it getting these dawn/dusk timings from? Anyone know the file? Is it updated at all?

Thanks for all the responses. It did indeed switch to day colours in the morning.

I don't think it would need a separate file. Those clever mathematical types can calculate dawn/dusk times from the date/time/position on the planet. All of which are available from the GPS signal. It's probably built into the system software.

The manual is poor with information on several menu options. But they are all easy to use with a quick mess around with them all.

When I connect my ONE to TT HOME and use the Operate My Device, the Brightness Menu is not available, so no way do take some quick screen-shots without using my camera and uploading.

You could use the screen capture facility on the tomtom itself if you have it enabled.
I can't remember exactly how to enable this and I don't have my tomtom with me to check but it is somenthing along the lines of: Make a folder in the root called screen with a file in it called capture then tap the upper left corner of the tomtom screen.
When you hear a shutter noise the tomtom will have dumped a bitmap of the screen contents into the screen folder.

You know the trick of creating a folder on your unit called 'screen' (lower case, no quotes) and within the folder createa text file called 'capture' (no extension, nothing in it, no quotes).

Now, any time you want to 'capture' an image on your unit, just press the top left corner of the screen. you'll hear a sound like a camera shutter. When you use Explorer, you'll see created a .jpg file (with random numbers as the file name but you can rename it, of course) in the screen folder.

You can capture as many screens as you want in this manner.

Mind you, the requirement to press the top left corner of the screen does affect the functionality of the '+' sign for zooming the map.
