|
|
Can anyone with a new TomTom screen mount advise please. I am looking to buy a TomTom 1 as a Christmas present for my daughter. She travels a lot for her work and is in and out of the car all day. Is the TomTom easy to detach and re-attach to the mount? The reason I ask this question is I have heard the selling point with the new TomTom 1 is that you no longer have to leave the mount stuck to the window alerting criminals to the fact you have a SatNav, one simply pulls the mount off the window and it neatly folds away.
That may be OK if you are only doing this once or twice a day but in my daughters case that could be a dozen or more times a day - I can't see the sucker lasting very long at that rate. She wants to simply unplug the device and pop it in her handbag leaving the mount on the window. So just how easy is this to do given my daughters situation - should I be looking at another product? Before anyone suggests a different mount - this is a company car and she is not allowed to drill or glue anything to the car. |

Hi,
Just a thought but if she's got a flat section of dash available why not try a bean bag mount ?
Nothing to unstick and doesn't leave any marks on the car
Oh and the mount that's used for the X20 series is very easy to put on / take off - no effort needed at all and it's very small so easy to stow away.

Can I just make this point very clear so as not to confuse posters - my daughter does not want to take the mount off the Window she wants to detach the TomTom from the mount and re-attach umpteen times per day, like I would with my GO300. The new mount may be easy to detach from the Window but will not last long if taken on and off approx 60 time per week. |

If you are thinking about the easy port mount (it resembles a cup holder) then removal of the device from this is very easy leaving the holder on the screen, it is the replacing of the device that isn't too clever - I never really got used to it - there are better third party mounts available for the device though - Mike |

Yes that sound like the one, folded away you can see the large centre speaker. Any third part mount would itself have to stick to the window and not the dash - her companies got a very strict policy regarding company cars. What is the issue with re-attaching? |

She probably won't get a choice. The mount that came with my ONE v2 (which means it's quite an old one, so I don't know if the ONE comes with anything better now) used to fall off regularly, even while I was driving, especially if the weather was hot/dry.
Otherwise, to answer your question - yes it's pretty easy to remove/attach the device, but connecting/removing the power cable* was a PITA.
* - of course, if you're making short trips you can run off the internal battery and charge at home, but I used to attach the power all the time. |

The New devices with the Easy Port mount are very different to the earlier units, I never suffered fom it falling off the windscreen.
Removal of the device from the holder was very easy, putting it back on I just found it difficult to get to clip to the mount, it either took a lot of force or when you thought it was attached and let go it would fall off. - Mike |

then my original suggestion of a bean bag mount will probably suit - attach the sucker section of the mount to the bean bag and just unclip the Tomtom from the mount - stow the whole lot in the boot or glove compartment - no wear and tear on the mount and no visible sign she has a gps.

The best advice is to 'suck it and see'. It's fiddly at first but becomes easier over time once you realise it requires a fair bit of force and isn't going to snap into two!
There are other options available to her if it proves too fiddly to do but I think she'd be fine. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Not a lot of space near the windscreen in my Mini and it's actually easier to mount it while I'm outside the car as it just doesn't seem to clip in properly unless you can get your hands round the back of it easily (which I can't) |

I'll have a look at this bean bag mount - I have to say it's something I have never heard of. Pity TomTom didn't carry on with the original GO mounts like my 300 - very sturdy and easy to detach and re-attach.
Another option might be to get her the XL - am I right in thinking that users a different mount again? |

It's not as bad as is being painted here. The whole point of it was to encourage owners to leave the mount attached and take it all with you, an anti-theft initiative.

The current XL uses the same mount as the ONE. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Once it's clipped on and off a few more times it will probably become easier and the fact the unit is so slim (mine's an XL btw) means it can be carried around easily rather than risking leaving it in the glovebox, especially as mine doesn't have a lock. |
