Hi All,
While my 2210 is away being repaired (see other DRP postings), I have been thinking & I have a few questions. I have a Navman 4410 with SmartST
I have read that there are issues with “in car” software, with written in programming to stop the mapping jumping around when stationary at say traffic lights. So this is then unsuitable for foot pace GPS work.
I am looking for software, which I can use away from the car, in areas (mostly towns or city’s within Europe) that I have not visited before. I have looked at the Navman PDF manual & no mention of on foot use. I have been told that TT2 can be selected for foot work, but I don’t want to spend that amount unless I have no other option.
I have been looking at Autoroute 2004 with the extra Pocket Streets, so I can down load areas I am visiting and hopefully use it on foot. I have also looked at TT City Maps or Route Planner for the same reason & the price, but no mention of “on foot” work.
Has anyone have any suggestions.
DRP

You can use pretty much any street navigation software (including SmartST) to walk around in cities. The "Walk" option only adds functionality to ignore one way streets and other direction restrictions.
What you refer to is "snap to road" and it is not really a problem in the city. Only in very rare cases you will find that it locks you to a neighboring road, but even then this is better than if it would show you walking through houses...
For walk outside of towns you need different software (it's called topographical) _________________ Lutz

Thanks for your reply.
Not being able to put it to the test (at present), but I will. Another question.
Can I run 2 applications at the same time? SmartST & Route Planner, or any other software. I am a total novice, with to PDA’s
Thanks DRP |

you can only do that if you use two different GPS receivers (for example one BlueTooth and one serial). It is not generally possible to connect two programs to the same GPS receiver. _________________ Lutz

Autoroute and Pocket Streets, although very basic in terms of the maps, is quite good for walking on foot in towns and cities and relatively cheap too. You have use of all of Autoroutes POI,s and you can also add your own. They are transferred when you send your selected map area to the PPC.
You can also download complete city maps from the MS website for free.
I already had Autoroute so I downloaded it to the PPC and have used it on foot and have found that it is pretty accurate at plotting your position.
Not the best mapping software in the world but it is definitely useable. |
