GPS on a medieval map

Is it possible to turn a scanned image of an old map into a GPS file?

I guess a better question is "How do I turn an image file into a gps map file"

I'm running Windows Mobile on an Dell AXIM using I can't remember what software - one that lets me load map fules at an rate.

Are their packages that can to this type of thing?

There are a number of applications that will allow you to import a scanned map and then calibrate using known locations but the inherent inaccuracy of any very old map makes this rather pointless?
