Had a search and couldn't see this mentioned, found out how to create itineraries with googlemaps ( and another free app) yesterday.

In essence you can create an exact itinerary on googlemaps very easily, much easier than using the screen on a tomtom, and then quickly convert that to a TT itinerary and load it onto your TT.

There is a website that purports to do the conversion directly but it didnt work for me, but there is an equally simple way that does work, is that worth me posting here, or is it 'the bleeding obvious' and not worth me posting a 'howto'?

The three ways I can think of are:

1. Export a Google Maps itinerary in .kml format and use an external prog or website (such as PoiEditor.com) to convert it to .itn format

2. Use "Tyre" - an add-on that is even integrated into TT Home now. Works with Google Maps or Google Earth if you don't have an internet connection.

3. Create the route in Google maps and use the "Houghi script", either on his website or you can download the code for your own use.

Is yours something different?

Not different, it was No 1 :-) I used an app I found called itnconv.

I couldn't get the Houghi script to work for me, and it was nothing to do with the bit about moving the start / end points.

Will check out Tyre and see how that works, which would you 'recommend'?

Tyre is by far the easiest to use and it can do more than just Itinerary files - Mike

Yes, Tyre is the one to use with Google Maps. I have been using Tyre and Google Maps for many months on a daily basis (Courier) and on holidays in France/Spain.
Itinerary planning is one of the most useful features on a Tomtom. You can plan your Itinerary on the PC and get TomTom to navigate the route that you have chosen, not the route that Tomtom prefers.
No more getting stuck down narrow lanes or going through city centres with Itinerary, unless you want to do so. The choice is yours when you plan your Itinerary.
Bon Voyage

I use it a lot but have only recently discovered that when using HOME to operate the TT you can set your current location anywhere you want. To do this you click "Set Current Location" - talk about missing what is under your nose, though I did not use HOME much for planning, before. Also discovered that planning is much faster - obviously using the pc's processing power rather than the TT.
About to go to Spain for a month and intend to try TYRE for itinerary planning.

Any chance you can tell us how you do this via tyre once you have had a go, as im also headed for the sun.

Ive tried, but i cannot get it to create a route via France's pretty route, only via the motorways comes up.

Cheers!

Hi MPW,
One thing you can do when TYRE creates a route and you want to amend it is to create a pushpin on a part of the route you want to change with a mouse left click, and drag the pushpin to a point you want to drive through. the route will now change, and route via your new point. Very Happy

Incidentally this method also works when running Google maps as a standalone program as well.
