What's the deal with GPS driving directions? Many developers have said that Apple's SDK license agreement prohibits the development of driving-directions apps, and the New York Times's David Pogue muddied the waters by saying that the iPhone's GPS isn't physically capable of providing driving directions. "According to Apple, the iPhone's G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle," Pogue wrote.
That's wrong, Joswiak said; the iPhone's GPS is just like the GPS in other phones, many of which do provide driving directions. Rather, there are some murky "complicated issues" preventing driving directions apps at the moment. "It will evolve. I think our developers will amaze us," he said. |

what's 'complicated' about that? apple specifically ban it in their SDK!!

I can understand them not allowing you to make applications for "automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices" (ie autopilot applications on real vehicles) and "emergency or life-saving purposes" as GPS itself is not supposed to be used for these.
However, "real time route guidance" and "dispatch or fleet management" is what GPS applications are all about - or am I missing something? _________________ Gerry

From what I have read so far, this clause is being quoted out of contect - which is the Google maps interface part of the iphone is restircted. According to some information on the net it is allowed for someone like Tomtom to put there own maps and app on the iphone, you just cannot use the iphone/google maps libraries/SDK interfaces etc for these things
I have not got the time, or inclination, to read the full legal agreement in detail. I am sure the like of tomtom and Garmin have and will. |

MaFt,
What is 'complicated' about that is it relates to 'Location Services' in the current SDK; Turn location services off on the 3G, and GPS continues to function, so who is to say that the exclusion applies to GPS?
Who is to say that the exclusion won't be removed from future SDK terms?
It's transpired that although the 3G isn't Bluetooth A2DP enabled on launch, the chipset does provide the functionality - who is to say that increased functionality/ability/flexibility won't be introduced once the platform matures?
What is also complicated is that Apple themselves are suggesting that traditional Sat Nav is possible on the 3G, irrespective of current restrictions.
It's quite possible that the SDK will remain limited in terms of use of GPS capabilities. There are developments ongoing outside of the SDK - capability that Apple shares with carefully selected partners; there are suggestions that Flash development for the 3G is one such example.

There's a rumour of a 2.1 SDK which adds the Sat Nav capabilities to the GPS that we're all waiting for - presumably along with less stringent Ts & Cs. Not GPS but a possible solution for the recurring "can I time my 0-60 or standing 1/4" type question.
This application for the 3G recons it can do these timings and more using the built in accelerometer.
Use it once out of curiosity perhaps, then what?
edit: Just thought of one. Bubble wrap the 3G and drop it from the upstairs window |
