I always thought that I could not use 770 when it was connected to PC via USB as it normally closes down into charging mode....
don't know what I did, but this morning somehow it started working just before I went out.
now I can not get it to do it again -any one have an idea? |

Normally you can't as the device enters USB Mass Storage Mode. You could try using the Safely Remove Hardware wizard to end this mode and see if that does it but i don't advise it... |

Thing is it worked early on today..... I thought it might be because of firmware update - maybe not |

This works, if you slide the switch to the 'LOCKED' position first. It doesn't work if you have the Garmin Lock enabled (because you have to slide it back to enter the digits).
The 2.90 firmware doesn't seem to have changed this behaviour. |

Insert USB lead and wait for 7xx to boot up in Mass-storage mode. Slide switch to LOCKED position and using the "Safely Remove Hardware" tray icon, 'Safely remove' the Nüvi drive.
Assuming you haven't got the Garmin Lock (ie Pin no.) set, the Nüvi should now boot up in navigation mode. When it's booted, you can slide the switch back to the normal position.
This was discovered by a POI-FACTORY.COM Nüvi 2xx owner, but seems to work for the 7xx series as well. It certainly works for the 760. |

Works on my Nuvi 750. I think that it's still on USB power even though the screen went darker.
This could actually save me a lot of trouble.
Nice!
ETA: After about 45 seconds the screen brightened up again as if on AC. Cool. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 750 w/City Nav 10 N. America & 08 Europe

Hi Guys,
New to the forum and just picked up a 750.
I tried the above sequence but it's not working. Has it been "disabled" for fw 3.0? |

I have the 750 and I just updated to software version 3.0 and it still works.
Plug in USB.
Wait until it's recognized the the computer.
Slide Nuvi to LOCK
Use "Safely remove Hardware" to disconnect the USB connection.
Wait ffor the Nuvi to reboot
Slide LOCK off and it's in normal mode but accepting USB power. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 750 w/City Nav 10 N. America & 08 Europe

this was handy the other week, i forgot the bring the nuvi200's power lead so robbed my brother's tomtom power lead... it entered 'pc mode'!!! grrrr... then i used another usb power lead i had in the car and that did the same... so annoying as i knew it hadn't been charged /used properly for about a month and we were doing a 4 hour trip!
i remembered this was mentioned in the forum and got it going so, not only is this useful for when connected to the c but also when you find yourself with a non-garmin power supply! in fact, the other power lead i tried was a garmin one from my old i3 so something has changed in the 2xx series power cables

I'll give that a try again.
Does the type of OS matter? I'm running Vista Home Premium. |
