I'm sure that when I first got my Nuvi 760T that I could download waypoints, etc from it into Mapsource, but when I tried it recently I could only upload to it - trying any sort of download into Mapsource results in a communications error. Can others confirm whether they can download as well as upload?
I am running Vista Ultimate and have had all sorts of problems with USB devices in the past, so it could well be that, although the Nuvi is recognised by Mapsource and uploading works fine.

Yes vista....I got a 770 recently and half the time PC does not recognise it - but this is better then my old 2610 which used to crash PC.....
I have been downloading a few routes from mapsource on PC no problem - other then repeated try's of recognising nuvi |

Hmm. I wondered if giving the Nuvi a hard reset would help. From what I've read you do this by holding the power switch over to the left for 8 seconds. However, when I tried this, it didn't help, and also I was expecting to lose my waypoints, etc which I didn't, so I'm wondering if I'm doing the hard reset correctly.
Can someone confirm the correct way to hard reset a Nuvi 760T please? |

Don't Know.... maybe you should consider returning it for a new one? I had to with mine. they are not as bomb proof as earlier models |

Well mapsource is only treating it as a disk....so - what can you see of the Nüvi's file system outside of Mapsource? - about the only files involved are \Garmin\gpx\current.gpx (containing current favourites, 10 currently loaded routes + 'n' Track logs.) and \Garmin\gpx\Temp.gpx which Mapsource writes to.
Rather than doing a 'Transfer from device', what happens if you do a simple "Open..." in Mapsource?
Might be worth doing a CHKDSK, or its Vista equivalent.

That's the only procedure that seems to be documented, but holding your finger on the bottom right of the screen while powering up, offers to clear some data for you. |

slightly of topic, but I did not realise till I saw it on here somewhere
if you have a 7XX series nuvi and contact Garmin, they will give you your unlock code and link how to download mapsource latest maps to your pc.
So you can then transfer routes and waypoints etc..... |

if you register with MyGarmin it'll be there in your account under you units Serial Number. MapSource can also extract the Unlock Code from your Unit in some cases. One option when installing the code is to plug your Nuvi in and have it take it from there. |

Well, all is fixed. After speaking to Garmin tech support I did a reset to erase the user data (press the bottom right corner of the screen and switch the unit on while you keep on pressing until you get a prompt to clear the user data).
That fixed the issue with not being able to download to MapSource.
After some more investigating and comparing files, I found that the current.gpx file that had been on the Nuvi was corrupt. One of the "name" fields had a string of 12 or so question mark characters at the end of it. I assume that the Nuvi could cope with this but MapSource couldn't, which was why I couldn't download to it. Hand-editing the file, removing the offending characters, and uploading it back to the Nuvi seems to have resolved the problem.
Which leaves the question of why it got corrupted in the first place...
Still, I'm happy. |

They answered promptly enough, but the guy had never heard of a similar problem and was at a bit of a loss as to what to suggest, other than updating Mapsource to the latest version, which I'd already done, or trying a different USB lead (done that too).
I ended up by asking him how to erase the user data to see if that might help, which he told me - incorrectly, as he said to press the top right of the screen rather than the bottom right.
Seeing as that did fix the problem and led me to the answer of what was going on, I'd have thought he could have at least suggested I tried that rather than me having to suggest it to him.
So, not overly impressed.
I do have to say, though, that the last time I contacted them about a broken battery cover on my GPSMAP 60C to find out how much a replacement would be, they sent me not one but two free replacements without even charging me postage, which I thought was excellent service considering it was well out of warranty. |
