|
|
Hi ll, newbie here so please go easy.
Couple of things, firstly my brother in law brought his TomTom One round to my house on Sunday and a CD of USA maps to install (think he got it off ebay) and I couldn't figure out how to install them for him.
Secondly I am going to Florida in October and want to take satnav with me with Florida maps on and I have no idea which one to buy, I was going to get a TomTom One but seeing it was so difficult to install the maps I am hoping that there is some other unit out there thats its easier to install maps on.
Thanks for any help.

Maps are locked to the device. When you buy them from TomTom (you can only buy legap maps direct), you buy them for your device. Unless there is something special about US maps for the One, these are likely to be pirates if bought from ebay and so won't work.
Getting maps from TomTom is quite easy if you have broadband (it is downloaded via their "Home" application on the PC) though takes some time. There will also be disk space issues to consider. Some high-end devices have both Europe and US maps pre-loaded I believe. _________________ Gerry

Only the TomTom Go-920 is currently sold with Europe and US mapping pre-installed, but you could purchase any of the devices in the product range and add the "US South East Region" map to it for £29:95, or get the full US map for just under £50.
The only device in the range to avoid is the One Third Edition Regional device as this has limitted memory. Whilst the extra map will work with the unit it would require removal of the UK map to make space for the US regional map in the on board memory.
The One Third Edition Regional will only take the regional US map though, it doesn't have suficiant capacity for the full US map.
Go for a device with an SD card slot and you won't have any problems adding maps - Mike |

brilliant, thanks for the quick replies.
Does anyone have any experience using sat nav in the USA? Its my first time there and I am a little nervous about driving there, I have had mixed reports from various people some say its easy to drive over there others (including a Manchester cabbie) say it horrible and the maps on sat nav (think they used a pocket pc) were poor.

The mapping is said to be as good as here (well mapped down to street level but expect new roads not to be there). Have you driven on the right before? Have you driven in big congested cities? How are you driving in areas you do not know? The answers to these should tell you how you should get on over there. _________________ Gerry

I have driven on the right in Spain (for a week or so), I drive through and around Manchester on a daily basis (and on my motorbike), I don't mind driving anywhere at all (as long as I know where I am going). I have a garmin at the minute (tiny thing we bought about 2 years ago) so as long as thats working I will go anywhere. |
