|
|

Our friends over at Engadget have a story on the forthcoming and eagerly anticipated 3G version of the iPhone due to be released in early June.
Engadget's story is accompanied by a photo of an all black iPhone quite different to current models. The story suggest that not only will it be all black but this new model will contain a GPS.
The Apple rumour mill is already going at full speed with discussion and debate concerning the new model, there are for example, suggestions that it will not be locked to a single network when launched in Italy. But these images have sparked lengthy debate on their authenticity and origin in many Mac forums. Just one example can be found over at Mac Rumours.com. Much close scrutiny of the image has resulted in mixed opinion with some certain the image is a Photoshop fake and others convinced it's the genuine article.
What most agree is that the image, if faked, has been done so well that nobody has been able to prove it beyond doubt! The rumour of GPS support makes sense as this and 3G will gift the iPhone with a spec sheet that plants it once again firmly at the top of the most desired gadget list for a great many users.
If the rumours do prove true I can predict Mrs G will become the new owner of my current iPhone! _________________ Darren Griffin |

My thoughts exactly.
No doubt they will come up with something - they have to, the present offering falls well short.
I've not bought one because of the lack of 3G and the poor camera.
My present contract is up at end of April, and Orange are trying desperately to get me to sign up again, holding back though.
My TT710 needs replacing (not that heres anything wrong with it - just 2 years old), and if i can kill 2 birds with 1 stone, i'll be happy. _________________ Triumph Tbird 1700. And now a Bonnie T100. |

I've seen quite a few rumours about iphone, before during and after it's release, so why should iphone2 be any different.
Whilst I might hope it'll have gps and a2dp, and 3g, and... etc. etc. there are too many people out there who'll get a kick out of causing a bit of a disturbance. Just be patient, and wait and see!

I have to say, I rushed out and purchased the current iPhone a couple of weeks ago when the price was reduced to £169 and I thought I'd never say it, but its a great device, just missing GPS & 3G. Today I tried using my Vario III for the first time in two weeks and it feels SOOOOO big and cluncky in comparison, but I need the GPS & 3G.
So lets hope that if the new model does have 3G, Apple do not restrict the applications that can be used, I would like to see Sling Media, You Tube & iPlayer all running over 3G and not restricted to WiFi. The GPS will only be any good if TomTom decide to provide support for the iPhone.
Whatever happens the biggest problem is going to be battery life.... |

I really like it, the interface makes every other phone and PocketPC seem as though they came from the Stone Age!
3G would be nice, as would GPS but as you say, battery life is critical. 3G coverage is still nowhere near as good as it ought to be. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I purchased one back in Jan/Feb. I had a Windows Mobile GPS phone before that. Even though I miss having the built in GPS I'd definitely agree the phone is like nothing else. I can't wait until third party apps come along, especially 3d games.
Doubt I'll run out and get the 3G version. In my town we don't even have edge support let alone 3G. I'd love GPS though, especially as the iPhone has such a fast processor and 3d graphics acceleration in it. Could make for some very pretty interface.
For now I managed to pick up a used Tomtom One for £80. Not sure if its possible to upgrade to the next iPhone if I'm tied into the 18 month contract. Not sure if I can sell it on either.
Oh and about the picture, it's definitely fake. Someone identified it as a 3rd party case. Engadget were just using it as an example. |

Have to disagree there, some claimed it to be the Colorware case ( process that colours the existing metal backing). It clearly isn't. Colorware don't reprint the text and copyright on the rear and you can clearly see in the image that the back is a single part where current models are two part metal and plastic antenna cover.
Some expert Photoshop users have examined the original photo, applying filters and other techniques to look for evidence of tampering and can find nothing to suggest it's not an actual photo. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Ok, then why isn't there a photo of the front?
If they had enough time to take a picture of the back they could have turned it over and snapped the front! Hmm indeed! _________________ Dom

Who knows, it could be part of the Apple publicity machine, an prototype case seeded to stir interest, it could be the real thing but the front has identifying info that would give the game away or it could be a very clever fake. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Either way, I still struggle to put my iphone down at times, so I'm in no rush to replace it!
[Edit]
We haven't even heard the end of the sdk project so I reckon it'll be cheeper just to wait for a gps addon. _________________ Dom

I would like better data speeds on the network but it's not a must have, I can live with it rather than face increased battery drain (although there are much better 3G chips now with better power handling).
In the absence of any firm info I'll be happy to see what iPhone 2.0 brings to the party and what issues we may have with unlock post the upgrade. whatever happens I have no intention of switching service provider just to use a phone!
But imagine TomTom on an iPhone? Their PNA's are Linux based, as is the iPhone. Killer platform? _________________ Darren Griffin |

I think this is the picture of the 3rd party case hailstorm is referring to.
Whatever comes out, I'll be queuing up to buy one. I'm not fussed about the iPhone having built-in GPS receiver (my TomTom bluetooth receiver does me well), but I do wish Apple would let devs access bluetooth with the SDK. And if the new iPhone does have GPS, hopefully it'll be a decent chipset.
And here's hoping TomTom DO come up with an iPhone app... I just can't get used to iGO. _________________ Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want. |

Jurys out! Until apple actually say 'this is it' then every thing is a rumour. I personally am waiting for A2dp bluetooth, word is that the current iphone is able to do a2dp, but it is just turned off. With it and sdk, it might be possible to run an external bluetooth gps device, as well as finally being able to use a bluetooth headset for both music and phone at the same time. _________________ Dom

An almost perfect solution would be a V2.0 firmware upgrade that supports current iPhones, includes Exchange Push technology and full bluetooth profile support so that external GPS receivers can be used.. ahh and TomTom to release their software for iPhones. |
