pocketgpsworld.comAt long last I'm pleased to announce that the GO 920 review is now available here.

TomTom's GO range of PND navigation devices needs little by the way of introduction. The TomTom brand has become synonymous with satellite Navigation in the same way that Hoover has with Vacuum cleaners.

The GO x20 range was introduced with some fanfare in Cannes, France last summer and initially consisted of the 520 and 720 models only. There was at the time no replacement announced for the 910 model.

Despite fervent denials from TomTom that a 920 was planned it subsequently popped its head up above the parapet in time for the Christmas sales period in Europe. It had already broken earlier in the US where the requirement for a device capable of holding a single country contiguous US map was more pressing.

I've tried to cover every aspect of the device in what is a very lengthy review but will inevitably have missed something! So if there is an area that you are particularly interested in that I have not mentioned, please post here and I will endeavour to add it.

It might be my comuter but for some reason there is an image down the right of the screen that has a small red X in it instead of the image but if you could check it just incase it is not my computer. Wink

EDIT TO POST.

I seen it Darren. Was trying to edit my post before you replied. On another note that is a good review. Well worth a read. Thumbs Up

Don't you mean "It's behind you!"?

Minor details.
On PC, Home fires up automatically when you connect to PC, whereas it doesn't with Mac. (worth bearing in mind when advising people to use Windows Explorer - they need to minimise, or at least ignore, Home).
I have found that the remote doesn't browse map like its predecessor - you can't move around the map with it, only zoom in and out. Sad shame, really.

Impressive review - I was particularly taken with the screen dumps - hate to think how long it took.

HOME can be switched to fire up automatically when the Mac boots (see the Preferences -> General option) and I'm pretty sure this can be enabled/disabled on the PC version too? I don't want it running any longer than I absolutely have to, horrid kludge that it is!

I'll mention that, you did discuss it with me and I forgot Embarassed

Last time I was trying to do a set of screen dumps, I kept forgetting to poke the button and went on to the next screen too quickly. Absolute nightmare, I admire your discipline and perseverance. And sorting out all those huge dump file references. Rolling Eyes

Before I go ahead and buy a 920T, I need to check if the map it is supplied with shows a major new road which was built and opened about 6 months ago.

The road is the A30 in Cornwall, and runs from N 50.436554 W 4.762673 to N 50.403668 W 4.906966. The new road is dual carriageway all the way, with only 2 (I think) major junctions along its length, while the old road is single carriageway with multiple minor junctions.

I would be very grateful if someone with a 920T could check this please, as I don't want to upgrade my TT until the map shows this new road.

Many thanks

Here's a screen-shot, does it answer your question?

That looks like the old road.

If you track a couple of miles west, does the road cross a railway line twice like this: http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9994/capturejs5.th.jpg

If so, that confirms its the old road on the map. I would have thought that a major new road like this would have been on the latest map by now. Oh well, I'm going to have to keep my money in my pocket for a while longer.

Btw, what is the map number on the 920? It looks like I'm going to have to wait for the next map to come out.

Thanks for your help, Darren

You'd be surprised how long it takes for new roads to be added. If the road is only 6 months old it may have just missed the last release.

There is a very minimum 6mth lead time between survey and the map being available to manufacturers. And that assumes the survey was done as soon as the road opened. Factor in the time required to convert the data for release to customers and new devices and then the wait until a scheduled map update program begins and 12 - 18mths is more reasonable.

Your link was too small to discern but here's the view a few miles West?

The Map version is v710.1576 btw

You're talking the new dual carriageway which runs west of Darren's screenshot, to Indian Queens, right? In which case I'm pretty sure it isn't. I drove it (eastbound only) not too many months ago VERY soon after it opened and it wasn't on the map - NOT the 920 with the 7.10 map, I think it would have been the previous map v675. I've tried looking, but I've done over 230 jobs and can only see two that direction at a quick look - April and May.

To be honest, that road has been open nowhere near long enough to get on the maps yet - probably waiting for a map some time in 2009.

The new road bypasses that naughty low railway bridge at N50.415646, W4.848775 and it is still unchanged on the 920 map v710.
